The concept of transmission, as defined by Ratliff, is the transmissions of feelings and ideas from a composer to the listener. Ratliff, just as Hanslick once did, believes that music is more than just a pleasing sound to the ear, it is a chamber carrying and transmitting emotions such as “love, virtue or immortality.” I, without a doubt, agree with such notion. I believe that music is a series of stories just waiting to be listened to. Today, more than ever, feelings such as love, anger, and virtue, can be easily traced because of the contemporary liberal world that we live in. Composers are no longer restrained to write about what society views and accepts as “correct;” instead, composers can speak for themselves and write about whatever they like, even speaking out against society itself. Such contemporary free world makes emotion easier to pinpoint making it harder to argue against the notion that music is meaningless. A song in Ratliff's playlist that exemplifies such transmission is “La Voz de Mi Madre,” by Maya y Cantu. Lyrically, the song is not that difficult to translate as it repeats the same six lines two times. Emotionally, however, the composer transmits a series of emotions through every word which ultimately conveys a sense of regret. A song outside of Ratliff’s playlist that also exemplifies Ratliff's claim is “Neighbors,” written by the rapper J Cole. In the song, “Neighbors,”J Cole, through the lyrics, the beat, and the rhythm of the song, conveys his frustration towards the racist society that we live in today upon his listeners. It would be foolish to claim that songs such as “La Voz de Mi Madre” and Neighbors are meaningless as they both convey a story through a series of emotions.

Credit: Rest Mutore

This image of Alick Macheso crying demonstrates the emotion that composers implement int
o their music as this image is an image of him crying over a song about his life.

Credit: Pat Higbie

This image demonstrates the transmission of emotions and ideas onto the listener.
