He didn't get there overnight though. Baker was only a 3 star recruit coming out of high school. He only got four division 1 offers from smaller schools. He decided to walk on at Texas Tech instead of taking one of his few offers. After one season, he left Texas Tech due to miscommunication with his coaching staff. He transferred to Oklahoma without their coaching staff knowing. He wasn't eligible for his first year and wasn't allowed to play yet. The next year Baker had a very successful season but would lose his top target. Baker was getting criticized for being too short and not skilled enough to play at the next level. In April 2017, before his senior season, Baker was arrested for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest and fleeing. This gave the doubters more of a reason why he shouldn't pursue his football career at the next level. He was drawing comparisons to former quarterback Johnny Manziel who had a past of getting in trouble. Going into his senior year, Baker put his head down and went to work. Baker set many records in his senior year and achieved the most prestigious award in all of college football. On December 9th 2017, Baker Mayfield became the 83rd winner of the Heisman trophy. Although critics are still doubting Baker on and off the field, he is looked at as a top NFL prospect going into the NFL Draft. I believe they should receive a salary because it is required for them to go to college for their future teams, they barely attend classes, and they will be one and done. The FBI has gotten involved with the NCAA over high school basketball players getting paid to attend their colleges. For many years now, it has been a known rule that you can not pay student athletes to attend a certain college. But due to the fact that the same 5 teams kept on dominating the competition, schools started to pay top high school recruits to attend their colleges. The top high school recruits usually go on to be one and done players. After one year of school they declare for the NBA. These investigations have caused a lot controversy. So should student athletes get paid to play? Since most players are just going to college because it is required to go to the NBA, I think they should pay student athletes to play. Also, during the season, with all the traveling and dedication that takes place, student athletes barely attend classes.
