One way that you could bring them together is challenge students to rewrite stories and include figurative language. Once they get comfortable doing that give them some vocabulary words to try and work in to enforce both vocabulary and figurative language.

I feel like vocabulary and figurative language can go hand and hand with each other. I would want to focus my attention towards reading and literacy. I think figurative language is shown a lot throughout children's books and fairytales. I would want my students to pick a fairytale to read and focus on the different figurative language and vocabulary present in the stories.

I would include both by having students write their own short stories. After they write them, I would have them go back and rework them by adding new vocabulary they have learned as well as adding in figurative language.

I think that using poetry would be a great way to teach figurative language and vocabulary together. Poems use a lot of figurative language and often have new vocabulary words. The vocabulary and language could be discussed in class or in groups.
