What does INCLUSION mean at CKJS? by Head Teacher

What does it mean to be a truly inclusive school? We are excited to share a new opportunity for our school community to come together and have your voice heard! We have created a Padlet where all parents can share their thoughts on what inclusion means at our school. Our aim is to gather ideas and perspectives from all stakeholders to help us develop a shared mission statement about what it means to be an inclusive school and what inclusion truly means to us as a community. We would love for everyone to contribute a post - we're aiming for 381 parents to be involved - that's our goal. You can either write your name and the year group your child is in, or remain anonymous - whichever you feel most comfortable with. Please note, this Padlet is a positive space for sharing ideas and reflections, not a forum for negative comments. Thank you for taking the time to contribute. Your thoughts will help us shape a mission statement that reflects the voice of our whole school community.

To get you all started...A truly inclusive school is one where every child, regardless of their background, ability, or needs, feels valued, safe, and able to participate fully in all aspects of school life. Inclusion is not just about having policies in place; it is reflected in everyday practice, relationships, and the school culture.

Inclusion is about meaningful personalisation, underpinned by Reasonable Adjustments as set out in the Equality Act 2010. It ensures that disabled and differently-abled pupils are able to access education in a way that is equitable, not merely equal, and that supports both their experience and their outcomes across the whole curriculum.

True inclusion is not the same as integration. Integration asks pupils to adapt to existing systems, which are often based on normative and ableist assumptions. Inclusion, by contrast, requires schools to adapt. It is grounded in a strengths and needs-based approaches, with flexibility in processes, teaching strategies, policies, and culture.

Importantly, inclusion is not a standalone initiative but a whole-school commitment and a cultural movement. It requires visible leadership across SEND, with appropriate resource allocated to training and upskilling staff so that inclusion is consistently understood and delivered in practice. It depends on genuine coproduction with parents and carers, recognising them as partners in shaping support and provision. This must include recognition that some parents and carers will themselves require flexibility and Reasonable Adjustments in order to engage fully, and that this is part of an inclusive school community rather than an exception.

It also requires that flexibility is explicitly built into school policies and processes, ensuring that statutory duties around Reasonable Adjustments are not only met, but anticipated and embedded as standard practice.

Inclusion also means recognising that engagement is not binary. It is not simply a choice between taking part or sitting out. Within true personalisation, there are different levels and forms of engagement, and these may look very different depending on the needs of the child. An inclusive environment understands and values these differences, rather than measuring all pupils against a single standard of participation.

At its core, inclusion reflects a shift away from a purely medical, normative, or ableist model of disability and difference, towards a coproduced, accountable, and informed approach in which the school environment, staff behaviours and capabilities, and the wider community are iteratively shaped to reduce barriers and take collective accountability. This means creating environments that are sensitive, responsive, and not aversive to the needs of a wide range of disabled and differently-abled pupils, and to the diverse needs of parents and carers.

Very many thanks to CKJS for asking for our input into this essential and valuable work.

(5B)

True inclusion is not achieved through a one-off initiative or awareness day, but through consistent daily practice—reflected in classroom strategies, language, attitudes, and behaviour. It requires ongoing commitment to adapting teaching, challenging bias, and fostering a culture where diversity is recognised as a strength and everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.

Inclusion means creating an environment where every pupil feels valued, respected, and able to participate fully, regardless of their background or needs.

Inclusion breaks down barriers that are constructed by society and the environment that deny children opportunities to participate in education and school life in a fair and equitable way.

It is about seeing each child as an individual and understanding what they personally need to thrive. Inclusion is never a “one size fits all” approach. It recognises and champions that we all have different strengths, abilities, skills, beliefs, personalities and ways of learning.

An inclusive school will engage in a meaningful way with children and families, recognising that they are the experts in their own lives and together, determining what is right for each child.

An inclusive school will develop the skills and confidence of the team so that they have flexible, practical strategies, that they can easily access, that helps every child reach their potential.

Being inclusive means taking the time to truly get to know each child, the pressures they may be under, their emotional world, and the often invisible challenges they and their families may be navigating. With this understanding, the school can make thoughtful adjustments and provide support that genuinely helps.

An inclusive school develops the character of the whole child and is not just concerned about their academic progress. It is a place where every child can see themselves reflected in lessons, books, displays and experiences. Inclusion is only meaningful when it sits at the heart of the school and shapes every part of school life.
