Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a politician, philanthropist, and a South African anti-apartheid revolutionist. Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mvezo, Transkei in South Africa on July 18, 1918. He had a mother and a father who was the principal counsellor of the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. In 1930 when Mandela was 12 years old, his father had died, therefore having him become a ward of Jongintaba at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni. He had attended primary school where his teacher had named him Nelson. After completing his Junior Certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute he had gone to Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school. A few years later Mandela had began to study for his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare but wasn´t able to complete it because he had joined a student protest and had gotten expelled. Later on Mandela had completed his studies at the University of South Africa and went back to Fort Hare to graduate in 1943. May 10, 1994 he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On his 80th birthday he married Graça Machel, his third wife. Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to everyone where his devotion towards democracy and equality was outstanding.
-Joselene Bolanos

Mandela as a Young Leader

Even as a young boy, Nelson Mandela showed great promise of being a great leader. He was one of the first in his family to receive a formal education, and he showed great potential and dedication. Later on, in college, he showed his first signs of rebellion and leadership. Mandela was kicked out of the University of Fort Hare for boycotting and protesting discriminatory school policies. After studying law in the University of Witwatersrand, he then joined a movement that opposed racial segregation. With the help of the member of the African National Congress (ANC), Nelson Mandela participated in the creation of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in 1949. Although Mandela was always very serious with his work in the ANCYL, once the apartheid was introduced into South Africa, the politics and drive behind the organization kicked into gear. Racial Segregation was at an all time high in his beloved county, and Mandela was not the type of man to just sit there and take it. He was a leader. Nelson Mandela was the African Gandhi so to speak (for now); he used nonviolent methods to get their message across, such as strikes, civil disobedience, and protests. Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1956 for "treason". His time after prison starts the next chapter of his leadership role.

- Bryana McCarthy

Apartheid took place under white minority rule, and was a harsh political and social system in South Africa. Apartheid basically means "Separateness," as you can easily tell how this affected the the system and classes in South Africa. Racial discrimination and segregation for almost all except those who were of course white. There was four divisions, White, Black, Colored, and Asian. This even caused disputes between families, parents could be considered white and their children seen as colored. Apartheid was so harsh it got through even the smallest cracks separating almost all people into a category no matter what. Legislation required non-whites to hold documents on them to allow/authorize access to restricted areas. Apartheid only seemed to get worse when the government constructed facilities for the different races. In doing so people were limited contact with others, labor unions, and participation in government roles.
-Kyle Morphy

Nelson Mandela became a symbol for freedom and opposition, even while in prison. Oliver Tambo (Mandela's friend from college who also got expelled along Mandela's side for protesting) started the "Free Nelson Mandela" campaign. Once freed from prison, helped lead the African National Congress into it's first democratic election. Nelson Mandela paved the way for a multiracial government in South America, so naturally, he won the presidency for the Parliament by a landslide. During his presidency, he created commissions in charge of seeking out the human rights issues within the country. He was an advocate for the apartheid's end, and worked tirelessly to introduce social and economic programs that helped improve the lives of the black citizens. He established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to investigate the human right issues associated with apartheid. Nelson Mandela did not seek a second term as president, but rather retired after his first. He left a mark on the country of South America, and his legacy will forever be known and appreciated throughout the world.

- Bryana McCarthy

Nelson Mandela, along with 155 activists, were put in prison in 1956 for "treason". While in prison, groups against discrimination, like the African National Congress (ANC) and Pan African Congress (PAC) continued to fight for justice. After police shooting down and killing 69 Africans at a peaceful protests, terror and outrage spread across the country, causing the apartheid government to shut down the opposition groups. Mandela and the other prisoners were acquitted in 1961, and Mandela decided it was time to get back into the action. Fed up with nonviolent methods going nowhere, Nelson Mandela turned to lead a not so secret group of violent protesters. "The Spear of the Country" was what this armed branch of the African National Congress called themselves. They launched a sabotage campaign against the Apartheid Government, effectively getting their voice heard, yet with no solid results yet. When Mandela's plans were found out, and when he was found with his conspirators in a meeting, they were all sentenced to life in prison. Despite his skillful leadership and extensive work towards racial desegregation, he ended up being in jail for 27 years. Even as a prisoner, Mandela was still a leader. He became a mentor to his inmates, encouraging nonviolent protests for better treatment. He also drafted his book "A Long Walk to Freedom" and managed to get political statements in the news. Nelson Mandela was a natural leader.

- Bryana McCarthy

Mandela, along with 155 other activists found themselves in prison after certain protests. The anti-apartheid movement gained lots of strength and momentum. Especially when Tambo created a new campaign to "Free Nelson Mandela." Eventually after Mandela's restricted release, he gained his freedoms back and he led the African National Congress to negotiate with the National Party and South African organizations in desire to eliminate the apartheid.
-Kyle Morphy

The ANC( African National Congress) was formed in 1912. Its purpose was to try and gather all Africans together so they all could unite and become as one so they would be able to defend their rights and freedoms in South Africa. Mandela joined the ANC and in April that same year, his other fellow members and himself later on founded the ANCYL(African National Congress Youth League) which changed the course of ANC by moving it towards a more radical path full of nonviolent mass movements. Later on, Mandela as a executive committee member was then elected as the national president of ANCYL in 1950. On the topic of presidents, Mandela had also become the first black President of South Africa. With a victorious win in the 1994 election, Mandela took 62% of the votes claiming himself as president and claiming that day, April 27th, a national day/public holiday of South Africa. Another great achievement of Mandela was that he had served as the Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. Also, in 1995, Mandela founded the Nelson Mandela Children´s Fund which was a charity which had been created to try and help individuals from birth to age 22, mostly orphans , from the AIDS crisis. A couple years later in 1999, he also founded the Nelson Mandela Foundation to try and promote his vision of freedom and equality for all. Throughout Mandela´s career, he had received more than 260 honors and was awarded with the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. In Mandela´s lifetime as president and as an overall role model for anti-apartheid, he had helped millions with better living conditions including water and electricity, plus he had helped millions with a movement towards justice and ending once and for all...discrimination.
-Joselene Bolanos
