This newspaper was published right after the assassination of Abe Lincoln. This was a nationwide tragedy, and Harper's Weekly was one of the newspapers that wrote an article about it. The whole newspaper is filled with grief, and it speaks of how they lost an extraordinary man to the bullet of selfishness. In the movie, the point that Lincoln is shot is an extremely depressing scene. It seems as if the world seems to slow down in that moment. It was a moment of pure loss.
http://www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/civil-war/1865/April/abraham-lincoln-death.htm

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution is the primary source that the whole movie is based upon. In the movie, Lincoln is trying to end the war while passing the 13th Amendment. This amendment states that no state is allowed to own slaves except for punishment of a crime. This was a revolutionary time period. The whole entire civil war was about whether or not to free the slaves or not. In the movie Lincoln was spending his whole time focusing on when the war would end.

Movie Thesis and Plot

In this movie, the war is in full swing. While trying to end the war, Lincoln is also pushing for the Thirteenth Amendment, which is a controversial idea. He has to convince the House of Representatives to vote for this amendment, while also dealing with family matters, like his wife's strain on the marriage. She constantly is forcing Lincoln to keep his temper. She is considered crazy, and as some historians would think, even bipolar.
This movie shows the passion and humanity of Lincoln throughout these times. Lincoln is absolutely focused on getting this law passed, even going as far as doing extra "under the table" things to sway votes. While he was not a bad person by any means, he did have to take things by the reigns and do whatever it took to pass that amendment before the end of the war.

The movie "Lincoln" is amazingly accurate, even down to the way he walks (flat footed). One of the only minor mistakes is that in the first scene of the movie, the black soldier is criticizing Lincoln and being disrespectful to him. In real life, the only person of color who would be considered likely to speak to him like that would be the famous abolitionist "Frederick Douglas", but even that would be a stretch, as Douglas was close friends with Lincoln. Another small mistake is that Lincoln cursed multiple times in the movie, and yelled a few times. Lincoln was a very mild-mannered and temperate man, very rarely cursing or being disrespectful. Besides the two minor points, the movie "Lincoln" is almost completely accurate. He did indeed study Shakespeare and he quotes it multiple times, and he also did store letters in his hat. This movie was a great representation of Lincoln and everything he believed.

Lincoln is an amazing movie. I would definitely recommend this movie to people. It is almost completely accurate to the time period, and it is still interesting to watch. It makes history very interesting to learn while remaining accurate. The director is a man that is very well known for making inspiring movies, and he has done it again. This movie has made Abraham Lincoln seem to be a relatable man who faced struggles head on, and changed America for the better.

I learned many things while watching "Lincoln". One is that Lincoln actually had to cheat to get what he wanted, even though he was known as "Honest Abe". I learned also that Lincoln did not want his son to go into the military. He actually pushed for him to go into law.

This source taught quite a bit on what exactly Lincoln did during the war. I could make connections to some of the people that Lincoln had connections to. During the movie, most of it was directed towards the 13th Amendment and the freeing of slaves. There were a few references of the actual war, some of which I connected to this document.
https://www.britannica.com/biography/Abraham-Lincoln/Leadership-in-war
