On the 8th of November, 1923, Hitler and 600 Nazi members seized a beer hall in Munich, Berlin and took three politicians, Gustav von Kahr, Otto von Lossow and Hans Seisser as hostages. These politicians were leaders of the Bavaria Government and were not pleased with the Weimar Constitution. Hitler used their disagreement as an advantage and tried to convince them to support him so that he could take down the Weimar Constitution. They agreed to fully support him at first so Hitler let them go. But once he let them go, one of them reported to the police about what had happened. The next day, the police arrested Hitler, leaving him with a broken collarbone. He ended up in house arrest for nine months and during this time, wrote his biography, "Mein Kampf". This event made Hitler much more popular throughout the country.

Hitler was worried that the leader of the SA, Ernst Rohm, was getting too powerful and would eventually overthrow him. So on the 30th of June, 1934, Hitler ordered the SA to go on leave for a month and ordered Himmler and Goering to eliminate threats posed in the SA. The SS and the police force eliminated the leaders of the SA and any other opponents Hitler had. Rohm was found in a homosexual intercourse party and was shot. Altogether, there were 400 people killed during the Night of the Long Knives. It is implied that the massacre was called "The Night of the Long Knives" because Hitler killed people by commanding his men to kill for him from a long distance, like a sword.

Passed by the Reichstag (444 votes to 94 votes) and signed by President Hindenburg on the 23rd of March, 1933, this act allowed Hitler to pass laws without consulting the Reichstag, destroying the democracy within Germany. Hitler overcame the opposition by preventing the Communist members to vote for themselves, having the S.A intimidate members as they enter the chamber to frighten them into voting for the Nazi Party, counting the absentees as present, and not counting the Communist Party votes. With this, Hitler also banned trade unions, political parties and abolished local government. This act also allowed Hitler to achieve his policy of Gleichschaltung, a policy in which Hitler brought the German society into line with the Nazi policy.
