The advocation of restoring territory that formerly belonged to a country. This idea is engraved throughout Chinese history. Taiwan is viewed as a country in the western world. Officially Chinese Taipei is not a country but a part of China. Irredentism is engraved throughout the Chinese government, when Taiwan takes actions towards independence, China often responds with a show of force to assert its claim to Taiwan.

China- Wants to reunite Chinese Taipei and China into one China all again. The belief that the Chinese government will crush Taiwan has been instilled into China's older generation, and that belief is still present to this day. This has continued throughout the generations and parents pass on this idea that Taiwan belongs to China and that they will take it with force when the time comes

Taiwan- Wants officially recognized independence from China. Taiwan has been ' a part of China' since they first split however the Taiwanese people's believe that it is a separate country with their own identity. This idea unites the people of Taiwan as they take more and more aggresive steps towards independence.

Result- Since both countries believe in two opposing ideas the world is at a standstill waiting for one to make the first move and kickstart the conflict. Both sides have given up on peace talks due to China's unwillingness to recognize Taiwan as independent and Taiwan's rash actions towards war.
