Initially, this assignment's broad subject matter overwhelmed me. I understand it presents a great opportunity to follow a path you're truley passionate about but it does make me aprehensive. This process could definitely lead to higher quality work but as the project spans the whole semester I do feel the pressure to pick the perfect topic and am worried about changing my mind. For this project to be successful I'll need a broad spectrum of ideas to choose from and really flesh out the ones I am drawn to. It may take a little extra work but if I am satisfyied with my choice, I feel I could really enjoy this project.

My target audience is those struggling with mental health who are seeking relief or assistance with their symptoms or guidance in getting help. Mental health is an important aspect of life for everyone so certain aspects of the demographic such as age and gender will be diverse. Different genders and ages will have different experiences with mental health and their own personal struggles, therefore certain ads could appeal to one group more than another. With this in mind, creating an add that would appeal to such a diverse demographic would be ineffective. I believe it is important for everyone to have access to mental health aid so to prevent my message from being exclusive, I will focus on a primary audience, and develop a video that will also have a wider appeal to a secondary audience.

A recent study on the prevelence of social anxiety in young people accross the world found that 90% of social anxiety disorders occurred by the age of 23 (Jefferies, P & Ungar, M 2020, p. 2). The article discribes how social anxiety disproprtionately affects younger individuals and that prevelence or severity dosent differ between genders.

Using this information, I can confidently profile my main target audience as female and male young adults aged from 18 to 25, suffering from social anxiety. As the severity or prevelence isn't seen to differ with gender, I can effectivly market my video to both males and females by simply relating to the experience. As social anxiety mainly effects younger individuals, it is ideal to target my video within this age bracket.

Everyone struggles with their mental health at one point or another in their lives, no matter their age, gender or position in life. I thought it was important to consider the wider community of those struggling with mental health who could also benifit from my product. This includes the wider variety of mental health diorders and also those who are struggling with things they are yet to understand. I believe my video will appeal to many mental health ailments as the main focus of the ad will be access to professional support 24/7. This benifits anyone who needs emotional support, guidence or professional help in an instant. For anyone who has ever struggled within the mental health system, this is a huge influencing factor. To those who are unaware of their own struggles, witnessing the symptoms might promt them to take action and seek help with ease through the app.

Attention:
To capture the attention of my audience, I plan to employ a first person point of view technique to my filming. This positions the viewer as the main character in the advertisement influencing them to relate to the situations unfolding. The audience will find themselves approaching their group of friends sitting outside at their local, laughing and having a good time. The atmosphere will be bright, bordering on lurid. As the character begins to panic, I will use sounds to increase the intensity to ensure all senses are involved. The colours, sounds and familiar situation will attract the audience. When paired with the dynamic shots of first person POV, the ad is sure to capture the audience's attention.

Interest:
to grab and maintain interest, I aim to create a relatable situation for my target audience of young adults suffering with social anxiety. I begin by potraying a casual evening with friends that initially appears warm and inviting. As the situation becomes increasingly overwhelming and the symptoms of social anxiety are portrayed on screen, the audience will be attracted to the atmosphere for it's familiarity to their own experiences. I want the audience to feel validated in their own experiences whilst being comforted by, and confident in the proposed solution. I want to push the idea that this is popular and common to sustain interest with an audience that might be influenced and put off by the stigma surrounding mental health and seeking help.

Desire:
My video will convey and overall sense of relief, dispite the first half being quite intense, it's mainly to hilight the greater sense of relief felt in the resolution of my ad. When it all gets too much, my caracter turns to the app and feels supported, calm and safe. They also feel achievement as they are encouraged and applauded for the progress they've made so far. Hopefully this will create desire in the audience for relief from their situations.

Action:
At the end of my video, my audience has witnessed the resolution and now knows of the simple, most convenient and effective way to relieve their symptoms and seek help for their struggles. whilst my character continues their therapy session, my app logo will fado onto screen along with a number and socials icon. A voice over will then call the viewer to action with th phrase "Trained professionals, 24 hours, 7 days a week, we are always here for you. Lets have a chat, in your own time". Not too pushy emphasisng the calming supportive tone but still putting the owness on the individual to take charge of their health and better their lives.

I want them to feel invited and able to access help and confident that things can get better.

To achieve this it is important to utilise the colours and fonts to reinforce my tone by conveying the right emotion.

Mind Map

Below is my mind map featuring 5 main branches that explore the interesting aspects of my product that could inspire the production of my video. The follwing is what I discovered as I expanded these 5 branches.

24/7 Access: I found this to be a very important aspect of my product as it fills the gap in our current mental health services. To have access anytime, means access to assistance during a crisis or the development of one. This is imperative to relieving the symptoms and effects mental illness can have on individuals. This is something I will emphasise in my video as I believe it will be a main influencing factor.

Professional Help: It is important to reassure potential customers of the quality of the assistance my app will provide. Accredited helth professionals will provide on going support and refferals and will create mental health plans and thearpy treatments for clients. This makes my app a credible and reliable service and it is important to convey this image in my video.

Long Term Therapy: Not only will my app provide help during a crisis at 1:00am, it will also provide ongoing therapy for those who would like it. If you need support at a moments notice, it never usually comes from your usual therapist, but through the app, your medical notes will be stored and when in a crisis, ou wont have to repeat yourself and you can recieve effective help straight away. Having it all in one means consistent support and development for the client. I may reference this in the video through the talk a cliet has with their therapist whilst in a crisis.

Mobile Phone Application: The conveniecne of accessing therapy through a phone application is a huge selling factor for my product. It allows access to an extensive range of clients a provide anonymity and privacy. No need to travel distances to appointments, relying on third party assistence to gain access to help, it can all be done through the app, total privacy. This also means the app can be used anywhere at anytime, meaning clients can choose their safe and comfortable space at a time that suits them.

Government funded/Private Heath Subsidised: There are many ways to get mental health support through government schemes but if you don't know where to look or who to ask, it can be hard to find. My app will collate all the information for eligibility, the forms and cover the application process so that everyone can have the opportunity to recieve affordable or free mental health care. This is something I wish to hilight in my video.

This mind map also helped me develop a name for my product, "In Your Own Time" to reflect the flexibility, convenience and accesibility of the product.

Image sources:
https://4vector.com/free-vector/mutual-community-55208
https://www.123rf.com/stock-photo/24_7_365.html
https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-a-health-psychologist-2795652
https://www.zaelahmar.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=802319
https://www.d25toastmasters.org/2020/06/08/help-them-achieve-their-goals/
https://lifesupportscounselling.com.au/specialist-areas/online-counselling/
https://xd.adobe.com/ideas/process/user-testing/conduct-usability-user-testing-for-mobile-apps-like-a-pro/

This video depicts another way in which you can manipulate the viewer into empathising with your cause through misdirection. I was really inspired by the creativity of this ad and despite how seemingly different it is to the Beyond Blue ad, the premise is the same. Misdirect the audience into believing their characters reality only to bring them back to their true reality. This technique really helps to validate the experiences of those suffering with the diorder and brings to ight their struggles to those unaware.

CAMH's ad depicts an anxiety disorder as a physical ailment one should be hospitalised for. Using the very real symptoms of a panic attack to add to the construct to make it more believable. As the hospital surrounds slowly fade into a home bedroom, the audience is introduced into reality but with the idea that anxiety is something that should be taken just as seriously as any other physical illness.

This inspired me to come up with my own unique way to mislead the audience and manipulate their view to sympathise with my cause.

CAMH 2018, I Can’t Breathe – Mental Health Is Health Campaign, video, YouTube, 7 May, viewed 5 April 2021, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBS7v-v5oMo&ab_channel=CAMH>.

I think this video is very creative in the way it presents the issue of anxiety to the audience. This video was produced by Beyond Blue, an organisation dedicated to raising awareness around mental health to diminish the stigma of speaking out and seeking help. This ad has a similar message to mine with a similar call to action, "Do you feel this way? seek help here...".

In this video they depict a symptom of anxiety, negative self talk and false prediction. I find it very effective as it presents quite a common experience for everyone to spark interest, but shows just enough severity in the symptoms that if you do really relate to the video, you will feel compelled to follow the call to action. I find the misdirection a very creative and subtle way to situate the viewer in the main characters world. When the video begins, the viewer assumes what their viewing to be true, then when the truth is revieled, they realise they experienced the reality of someone suffering from anxiety. This is very interesting to me as I intend to use first person to achieve this, but this techinque appears to be a less cliche. I feel it is more powerful to be mislead into empathising with someone elses experience, for you take their experience as the truth for at least a moment, leaving you more likely to imagine the experience after.

I am interested in incoorporating this technique of viewer manipulation in my video.

Beyond Blue Official 2017, Know when Anxiety is Talking – TVC (60), video, YouTube, 8 October, viewed 5 April 2021, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjxhqd5QJBU&ab_channel=BeyondBlueOfficial>.

This video is great inspiration for what I intend to do in my own video. The advert is filmed in first person point of view. The intention of the ad is to have you experience the anxiety that "one in 10" canadians feel everyday. The ad simulates an anxiety attack, hilighting the symptoms using sound to emphasise the rising heart beat and heavy breathing. Te black frame edges help visualise the tunnel vision and the shifting camera emulates the panic and paranoia. The aim of this ad is to use this simulation to attract the interest of individuals who havent experienced this before. Amassing interest in trying an anxiety simulation to possibly raise awareness for the disorder, all hilighted by the call to action with the website at the end.

While I intend to use similar techniques in my video, sound, visuals, colour and first person point of view to simulate an anxiety attack, my intensions are different. I want to create something realistic so people who have experienced something similar can relate and are intrgued. My target audeince is different and therefore the approach I must take will be different. I will follow the same path of presenting the experience first, then the product and explination after. As my product is a mental health app, my ad wil feature a resolution and then a call to action. I believe this will attract those experiencing the issues I'm presenting, like the lack of resolution in the ad below will attract people who are unaware of the disorder and are interested to know more.

Bridging Minds 2012, Bridging Minds: Anxiety Disorder Commercial, video, YouTube, 18 January, viewed 5 April 2021, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HN8t66e_vno&ab_channel=BridgingMinds>.

In this journal Ahmedani emphasises the overwhelming amount of people who do not recieve help for their mental illeness, he discusses to what extenet this is a result of the stigma and why that would be. The source defines Stigma as stereotypes or negative views placed on individuals or groups when percieved as different from the social norm. It details the different dimenstions that make up the mental health stigma and what this looks like in an every day sense. Amedani hilights the three levels of stimga as social stigma, self stigma and health professional stigma. He discusses how each of these affects a patients likelyhood of seeking or finishing treatment.

This source really helped me challenge my own perspectives on mental health and gave me a solid understanding on the stigma surrounding it. It was important for me to understand this topic as it is a huge factor I need consider when developing my ad if I want it to affectivly appeal to my target audience.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2021, Mental health services in Australia, Australian Government, viewed 6 April 2021, < https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/mental-health-services/mental-health-services-in-australia/report-contents/summary/prevalence-and-policies>.

This source is an online article produced by the Australian government to discuss the prevelence, impact and burden of meantal health in the Australian community. It provides a lot of govermnet sourced statistics from cnesus' and other governments research. I thought it would be appropriate to get an idea of the prevelence and "impact and burden" for Australia specifically. From other sources I discovered that it is important to understand an individuals culture to understand their help-seeking behaviour, so I thought I should find a source to discover more about Australia's culture around mental health in a generalised form.

The source also comfirmed that anxiety disorders are the most common form of mental illness in australia which supports my decidsion to use it within my add for the biggest possible audience within my classifications.

Barak, A & Hen, L & Boniel-Nissim, N & Shapira, N 2008, ‘A Comprehensive Review and a Meta-Analysis of the Effectiveness of Internet-Based Psychotherapeutic Interventions’, Journal of Technology in Human Services, vol. 26, pp. 109-160.

This source debates the effectiveness of internet-based therapy through analysis of a variety of data. It provided a comprehensive set of statistics and collated interesting concpets debated by other researchers. I found it beneficial to my understanding of the limitations fo my own product and the benifits too.

This article elightened me to the perception of online therapy and the fears, expectations, and doubts that individuals may have. I can use this information to break down and defy the expectations or assumptions that my audience may have about my product. This study found that online therapy was especially effective in treating anxiety and stress on par with face to face therapy. It also opened up the topic of ethics in patienty data security and confidentiality which i may need to adress in my ad to provide confidence.

Choudhry FR, Mani V, Ming LC, Khan TM 2016, ‘Beliefs and perceptions about mental health issues: a meta-synthesis’, Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat, vol. 12, pp 2807-2818.

This source gave me a broad understanding of mental health and how it is understood through different cultures and experiences. It talks about the cultural factors that can influence an individual's belief and knowledge of mental health and how this is shaped through personal knowledge or interaction with another individual suffering from a mental illness. For example the article notes that within the jewish population, mental health issues are percieved as an opportunity to recieve divine messages while Pacific Islanders often relate mental illness to family conflict. The article talks about how the perception of mental health illness affects help-seeking behaviour. This article synthesised multiple qualitative studys to form a discussion on the relevent topic. The source devided its results discussion in the following four main topics: symptoms of mental health issues, description of mental health issues, percieved causes and preffered treatment and help-seeking behaviour. The discussion was well supported by the data and statistics synthesised.

This article again challenged my perspectives on mental health, explaining how culture can affect help-seeking behaviours which is important for me to understand as I try to market my app to my target audience. My target audience isnt culturally specific so I must make sure i take into account the different cultural interpretations of mental health illness and how this will effect help-seeking behaviours as this will effect their willingness to interact with my product.

Jefferies, P & Ungar, M 2020, ‘Social anxiety in young people: A prevalence study in seven countries’, PLoS ONE, pp. 1-10.

This research article on conducted by Phillip Jefferies and Michael Ungar published by PLos ONE was a useful and credible source. The research article has been peer reviewed with the review details published along side the artice. From this source I gained an educated understanding of the prevelence of Social Anxiety in the current world and the demographic of affected individuals. The research was conducted with participents across seven different countries with almost equal representations of male and females between the ages 16-29. The research hilighted the number of individuals who indeed had social aniety diorder, and those who tested positive for the disorder but did not percieve themselves an individual with a social anxiety diorder. It was found that the social anxiety disorder diproportionately affects younger people.
Many statistics stood out to me and proved useful for my target audience research:
- " more than 1 in 3 (36%) respondents meeting the threshold criteria for having Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)." (Jefferies, P & Ungar, M 2020, p. 1).
- "Prevalence and severity of social anxiety symptoms did not differ between sexes" (Jefferies, P & Ungar, M 2020, p. 1).
- " 1 in 6 (18%) perceived themselves as not having social anxiety, yet still met or exceeded the threshold for SAD. The data indicate that social anxiety is a concern for young adults around the world, many of whom do not recognise the difficulties they may experience " (Jefferies, P & Ungar, M 2020, p. 1).
- " Studies also indicate younger individuals are disproportionately affected by social anxiety, with prevalence rates at around 10% by the end of adolescence [22–24], with 90% of cases occurring by age 23 [16]." (Jefferies, P & Ungar, M 2020, p. 2).

Stein, MB & Stein, DJ 2008, ‘Social anxiety disorder’, The Lancet, vol. 371, no. 9618, pp 1115-1125.

This article is a coprehensive guide to all that is Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). It provides a clinical definition of SAD along with the diagnostic criteria. It explains the profile of someone suffering from SAD, detailing the symptoms and traits. The article features an extensive epidemiology of SAD including prevelence, age, gender and perceptions. The causes and pathogenesis are detalied as well as various treatment techniques and their effectiveness.

It is crucial for me to understand exactly what SAD is, along with it's symptoms and traits to accurately and sesnsitively potray a character with SAD. The expereience depicted has to be genuine if it is to relate to SAD sufferers or those unaware of their condition. It is also important for me to know the effective treatments so that I can display an accurate interaction with my service in the resolution of my ad.

The advertisement opens with a shot from a first persons point of view. you, the character, has arrived at your local an you are approching your group of friends. The shot mimicks the walking of the character to the table and looks back and forth between their feet and the people at the table as the character tried to hide their nerves. The colours are bright and the atmospheric sounds a little louder than usual. A voice over details the charactres thoughts, noting their insecurity and doubt about those around them and the situation. The clinking of glasses and cutlery mix in with the sounds of chatter and laughter, increasing in volume. The camera starts to mimmic heavy breathing as the sound of a rising heart beat fades in. The characters thoughts begin to overlap and intensify. They are getting consumed by the sounds of the pub. The shot cuts away to close ups of people laughing, extreme close ups of beer glasses colliding, people eating and cutting up food, all the colours are lurid. It cuts back to first person as the camera rises as falls and moves back and forth between the people and the exit, the edges of the frame darkening. It quickly cuts to a close up of more chatter between friends. The shot moves back to first person point of view as the charater stands up and leaves the venue, the camera moving with them, the picture fading in and out of black as the tunnel begins to close in the characters vision. The screen fades to black and only the noise remains now a loud overwhelming hum. The ding of a notification rings amungs the hum. It rings again and again. A small blue glowing light slowly fades into frame as a over the shoulder shot of the character lying under the covers on their phone is revealed. The loud noise fades out and all thats left is the quiet ring of message notifications as the character uses the app to talk to their therapist. The messages in text, fade in on the left of the frame from the dark, encouraging and comforting the character. The app logo then fades onto the screen along with sublte social media tags. The phrase, "Trained professionals, 24 hours, 7 days a week, we are always here for you. Lets have a chat, in your own time", appears underneath the logo and is accompanied by a calm voice over. "in your own time" glows blue and remins on the screen as everything else fades to black. Eventually the last phrase fades to black.

First Half Colour Pallet

For the first half of my video I need the colours to be bright, rich and overwheling. It helps if there are some bright contrasting colours to make the image seem sickly. This is to convey the feelings of the character and to help the audiences empathysise with or relate to them. I chose bright browns, oranges and yellows which are just a little too bringt to be warm and inviting. Mixed together with a green, to relate to my second pallet but also as a contrasting colour to the brown.

image: https://stock.adobe.com/125284374/

The second half of the video contains the resolution, the solution to the problem so i want the audience to feel relief and calm. I intend to do this by giving the audience immediate relief from the lurid colours in the first half of the video. The calming blue with tones of green is reminicient of the ocean and bodies of water a pure and relaxing element. I want the audeicnes to feel washed over by relief and what better way to do that then colours reminicent of the ocean.

My Title Font

It is important for your font to reflect your tone. In my case I needed my font to be calm, comforting and inviting. I chose Ingra UltraLight designed by Ermin Međedović, as it was simple and visually appealling. The curves reflect the imagery or waves that I am trying to project through my colours and the spacing between the letters and the lightwieght of the font reduces crowding making it easy and relaxing to read.

I really wanted to keep the look of my fonts coheasive and orderly. If m fonts were drastically different and loud, I would be projecting chaos instead of calm. For my body text I stayed in the family and went for Ingra Cd UltraLight. It is less spaced out and more formal than the title but stil reflective of the style and mood. It lends itself well to paragrap form and it will blend nicely with my other fonts.

As the text in a little lightweight, I decided for my sub headings I would need a more defined and structured font. Sticking with the same style I chose another varient of Ingra for is slightly bold and more structured look. It catches the eye but isnt too loud or out of place compared to my other fonts.
