Representation of Gender

Men in thrillers are usually seen as the criminals, due to aggressive, violent natures, also in real news stories the majority of kidnappers are male. Women have always been seen as the weaker gender, so the fact that our male character is the one to go out looking for the daughter, rather than her Mother highlights his strength and 'manliness.' We also chose to subvert the general expectations that Fathers should supposedly meet, such as being caring and loving towards their children, especially using strength to protect them to make the audience question him and his villainous intentions.

Representation of Class

Due to him being a Janitor, which was introduced in our opening sequence by his props, which were a bucket and a mop, and his badge that read ‘Janitor’, It highlighted that he was working for a low income so showed that he was from a low class and was living in poverty. The lower class are generally looked at by the higher classes as below them, so are therefor felt sorry for, and sympathy is felt toward them. This gives us a head start in our thriller as we want our audience to instantly feel remorse for him, which will help draw them into the film, and also make them not expect that he will be the murderer, and that he is innocent.

Representation of Age

We presented our protagonist as not only being a young male, which put enough pressure on him in society, but by being a young father. His costume depicted his youth as he wore black trainers which in our research we understood was very common for young men in the twenty-first century to wear. This casualness of his sartorial codes, added with a scruffy zip up fleece and jeans helping to show that he is from a poor background, as his clothes didn’t look expensive. The mise-en-scene of his costume created a young look, which helps the audience identify his age, so they can possibly relate to him.

We based our character on news story's that we had read abut missing girls, such as the Huntley case, where A school caretaker lured two innocent students into his house and killed them. He then lied his way out of it by involving himself with the investigation and telling the news "while there's no news there's still that glimmer of hope, and that's basically what we're all hanging on to". We used this idea of having a cross meaning, where you don't know if he is lying and was involved, or if he is genuinely helping. We also researched the case of Shannon Matthews, where she was reported missing by her Mother and stepfather, but was found alive by police in a relatives house having been planned by her Mother and Stepfather as a plot to create money from the media. As our protagonist was from a low class and poverty, his sense of hope would come from money which is why we researched the Shannon case. We linked these two men together, Huntley and Shannon's stepfather to create Muller Patel as a mix of a Father figure and A caretaker/Janitor.

We represented Muller Patel as not necessarily stereotypical of A British Asian man due to his ambiguous character. However, due to the traditional view of Asian families being close, sympathy may be felt towards him, as he has lost his daughter, and the audience understand the importance of family in British Asian families, therefore his daughter going missing is a massive loss in his life.
