Community Service Learning means we should learn about and tackle issues--such as sexist/racist dress codes--that are prevalent in today's society. Growing up girls, such as myself, were pulled out of class to change our clothes since they were "too distracting". In other instances, black girls were pulled out of class, missing their education, to find out their protective hairstyles are "unprofessional". This artifact holds stories of girls who deserved better, speaking their truth today, teaching others of issues in our community so we can address this issue.

This pillar means having an open conversation while realizing others have different social positions that influence the issues they face; community building means working together, having an open and empathetic attitude, helping everyone communicate through their differences. Hung Liu's mother experienced the sacrifices and adversity of being a refugee, giving insight to many women's social position. Hearing other people's stories helps a community as a whole to understand where your peers come from and how it affects inclusion and civic engagement. This artifact is an example of communicating social positions to help others keep an open mind and influence positive engagement.

This artifact shows sculptures used from discarded items that are now repurposed; with tons of waste each year, many people recycle and/or find ways to clean up and repurpose garbage. Hiring workers for collecting garbage and transforming it helps the unfortunate have a job and transforming the discarded sandals helps eliminate waste from the environment. The creators of Ocean Sole heard the views of others and became active members, using citizenship to take initiative and better the issue of waste Kenya.
