From July 23, 1942, until August 2nd, 1943, approximately 700,000 people were killed at the camp. At its peak, it was killing 15,000 Jews a day. More humans were killed at Treblinka in 1942 than at any other place in the history of mankind.

The Treblinka Uprising

on August 2, 1943, they were among 150 other Jewish prisoners who made a daring escape bid, stealing weapons, setting fire to the camp and fleeing into the woods during the night.

Most were shot and killed by SS troops in the surrounding mine fields or hunted down and killed by SS and Ukrainian military units.

Samuel Willenburg was shot in the leg but kept on running, ignoring dead friends in his path. His blue eyes and non-Jewish features allowed him to survive in the countryside before making his way to Warsaw.

The last survivors of Nazi death camp Treblinka spoke about the excruciating torment they suffered during World War II.

Kalman Tagiman and Samuel Willenberg were both 19 years old when they arrived at the camp, where they were forced to assist in the mass murder of men, women and children. However, Kalman Died in 2012 and Samuel Willenburg died in 2016.

The Reality of Treblinka

Even so, Holocaust deniers have used the lack of physical evidence, such as records or mass graves, to suggest there was no genocide at Treblinka and that it was just a transit camp for Jewish workers.

But those claims were scuppered when British forensic archaeologist Caroline Sturdy Colls used ground-penetrating radar to find evidence of massive burial pits at the Treblinka site, which she said contains the burnt remains of thousands of bodies.

The Nazi's Hide their Tracks

Because the Nazis tried to conceal their activities at camps like Treblinka, we know far less about places that had no revolts. For example, at the Bełżec death camp, where nearly 450,000 were murdered, there was no uprising; we know of only two survivors, rendering the victims’ perspective of the camp a veritable black hole. Given these facts, the story of the Treblinka uprising is not simply one where a group targeted as victims took matters into their own hands—it underscores the long-term power of survival in fighting back against forces bent not only on mass murder, but complete erasure.

How did these victims Die?

The majority of Treblinka’s victims came from the Warsaw Ghetto. In July 1942, the Nazis began deporting Jews from there to Treblinka, promising the weary ghetto population that they were being sent “East” to be “resettled.” Packed into cramped cattle cars, the starving Warsaw Ghetto Jews were given bread and jam and even encouraged to pack luggage to take with them. The train station built at the Treblinka camp was disguised to look like a real station, with fake signage, ticket windows, and even a clock with painted-on hands. As Jews disembarked, Nazi officers told them they needed to be deloused before being forwarded on to their final destinations, and that Treblinka was a delousing camp. Forced to undress, the naked men, women, and children were hustled along a winding path that led to as many as 10 gas chambers disguised as a public bathing facility where they were murdered.

In my personal opinion, I cannot fathom the loss of life that happened at Treblinka. It is just too surreal to wrap my head around. I also can't understand how any person could possibly commit these terrible crimes without thinking twice about the lives getting cut short because of their actions.
