Wild World

Madagascar is unique: 5% of all known animal and plant species can be found here, and here alone. The island's signature animal is the lemur of course, but there are many more weird and wonderful creatures and plants: baobabs, insects, sharks, frogs, orchids, palms, birds, turtles, mongoose. The list goes on. Much of this biodiversity is under threat, from climate change and population pressure, giving each trip a sense of urgency but also purpose: tourism can truly be a force for good.

Epic Landscapes

The remarkable fauna and flora is matched by epic landscapes of an incredible diversity: you can go from rainforest to desert in just 300km. Few places on Earth offer such an intense kaleidoscope of nature. There are sandstone canyons, limestone karsts, mountains, fertile hills cascading with terraced rice paddies, forests of every kind – rain, dry, spiny – and a laterite-rich soil that gave the country its nickname of 'Red Island'. With 5000km of coastline, the sea is never very far, turquoise and idyllic in places, dangerous in others.

Island Adventures

For those who relish an adventure, Madagascar is a one-of-a-kind destination: the off-road driving is phenomenal, there are national parks that only see a few hundred visitors a year, regions that live in autarky during the rainy season and resorts so remote you’ll need a private plane or boat to get there. There are also more activities than you'll have time for: hiking, diving, mountain biking, kitesurfing, rock-climbing, you name it. Oh, and there are plenty of natural pools, beaches and hammocks on which to recover, too.

Cultural Insights

Madagascar has been populated by successive waves of migrants from various corners of the Indian Ocean. It is unlike anywhere else in Africa or Asia. There are fantastic sights to discover this unique history, but also numerous opportunities to meet local people via village stays, long-distance trails, festivals, taxi-brousse (bush taxis) and Friday night discos.

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is located in west-central Peninsular Malaysia, about 40 km east of its port, Port Kelang. It is the country’s largest urban area and a major cultural, commercial, and transportation hub. In 1974, Kuala Lumpur and parts of surrounding Selangor became a federal territory.

The city began in 1857, founded by 87 Chinese tin miners near present-day Ampang. Despite being in a malaria-infested jungle, it grew as a tin center. In 1880, it replaced Klang as the state capital, with rapid development credited to British resident Sir Frank Swettenham.

Kuala Lumpur was occupied by Japan during WWII (1942–45) and expanded after the war during a communist insurgency (1948–60), which led to the creation of new villages around the city.

The city's architecture blends modern and traditional styles, with skyscrapers, mosques, Chinese shop-houses, squatter huts, and Malay stilt villages reflecting diverse influences.

Madrid’s History

The history of Madrid dates back to the 9th century, when a Muslim fortress called Mayrit was built, which became the foundation for the city’s development. This fortress was erected around 852 by Emir Muhammad I of Córdoba and was located on the site where the Royal Palace now stands. Its main function was to control access to strategic mountain passes, as well as to serve as a base for attacks on the Christian regions to the north of the Iberian Peninsula.

During the Middle Ages, the Mayrit fortress was conquered by the Christians, marking a new chapter in the city’s growth. Madrid then developed into an important center for trade and administration, consolidating its regional significance. However, it was in 1561 that Madrid took on a decisive role in Spanish history by becoming the capital of the country. The transfer of the royal court to the city, carried out by Philip II, transformed Madrid into the political and cultural center of Spain, fostering its growth and prestige.

Over the centuries, especially during the Modern and Contemporary eras, Madrid continued to expand, becoming a hub of art, culture, and business. Despite its growth and development, the city faced difficult times. Among the major historical challenges were the Spanish Civil War, which deeply shook the country, and episodes of terrorism, such as the attack on March 11, 2004, which had a significant impact on the local population.

Despite these adversities, Madrid has remained steadfast as a modern European capital, characterized by a robust economy and significant cultural influence. Today, Madrid is a vibrant city, marked by a diversified economy and a rich cultural heritage. The city’s future is promising, with various development and innovation projects continuing to drive its growth and modernization.

Thus, Madrid’s trajectory is marked by continuous evolution that reflects its historical importance and its prominent role in the current European landscape, showing itself as a metropolis that values its past while embracing the transformations of the present and future.

Berlin, capital and largest country of Germany.

Main attractions

brandenburg gate

The city's largest green area, the Tiergarten park and the Victory Column, is located right behind the gate. It's worth taking a walk there and even taking a break between walking around the city. The German Parliament building, the iconic Reichstag, is also located in this area. We recommend that you schedule a tour (guided or not) on the attraction's website and walk around the glass dome and the terrace, from where you have a good view of the center of Berlin.

reichstag dome

Germany's recent atrocious history is remembered in several memorials and museums spread throughout the city. In a small area of the Mitte neighborhood, the Historic Center of Berlin, it is possible to visit some of them in a single day. We started with the Topography of Terror, the space where the headquarters of the Secret Police and other institutions that were part of the Nazi regime apparatus were located. Today, the place brings together documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, videos and audios that cover the entire period, from the rise to the fall of the German National Socialist Party.

topography of terror

Not far away is the Holocaust Memorial (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe): a set of 2,711 concrete blocks of different sizes, arranged in a large open-air area, in homage to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazi regime in Germany. In this micro-region of the Historic Center, you can also visit the Jewish Museum of Berlin, with several exhibitions that cross the history of Judaism and its influence in Germany. In addition to the theme, the architecture of the building draws attention to the attraction: a modern construction, designed along three axes that represent the experiences of Jews in the country — continuity, Holocaust and exile.

jewish museum of berlim

The terrible years of war, which left much of the city and the country in ruins, were followed by decades of a divided city. And there is an extensive and detailed itinerary that can be followed to better understand the period in which the 155 kilometers of the Berlin Wall were standing. The starting point can be the Berlin Wall Memorial, an open-air area where the best-preserved section of the concrete wall is located and where you can even see the Death Strip, the space between the two walls (one facing East Berlin, the other facing West Berlin) where obstacles and 24-hour guards were placed.

berlin cathedral

With a regular calendar of masses, Berlin Cathedral is the largest and most important Protestant church in the German capital. But it was inevitable: due to its beauty and location in the city center, it also ended up becoming an important tourist attraction, with highlights including its beautiful interior and dome, from where visitors have an incredible panoramic view.

Upon arriving in front of the so-called Berliner Dom, visitors are immediately struck by the Lustgarten, a large green garden with a fountain and full of families and young people enjoying the good weather (on warmer days, of course). The beautiful façade of the church, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, completes the scene, which is undoubtedly one of the most photographed in Berlin.

The region of Monaco is one of the oldest populated regions on the Mediterranean coast and reflects the historical and economic importance of this region in terms of trade and military affairs. France has even owned Monaco and still maintains a strong influence in the country, through the Grimaldi family, which is the most powerful locally and represents the local government.

Historically, French influence has continued in the country, even with the European military unrest of the 20th century, when Monaco was invaded by Italy and Germany. Today, Monaco, which is a very small country made up of a single city, has great economic power and is one of the most developed regions in the world.

Rome:

Introduction: Rome must be considered one of the most successful imperial powers in history. In the course of centuries Rome grew from a small town on the Tiber River in central Italy into a vast empire. Unlike the Greeks, who excelled in intellectual and artistic endeavours, the Romans achieved greatness in their military, political, and social institutions. The lasting effects of Roman rule in Europe can be seen in the geographic distribution of the Romance languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian), all of which evolved from Latin, the language of the Romans.

History: Legend has it that the birth of Rome is due to Romulus and Remus, abandoned and raised by a she-wolf and finally adopted by the shepherd Faustulus and his wife Acca Larentia. Once they grew up, the twins decided to found a city: to establish who should govern, they trusted in the will of the gods, through the flight of augural birds. From the Aventine, Remus saw six vultures, while Romulus, from the Palatine, saw twelve, becoming the first king of Rome in 753 BC. From the Palatine, the city would extend over the seven hills that we all know: Palatine, Aventine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline and Celiano.

The cultural and historical heritage of Rome: Rome's magnificent monuments, hundreds of churches and spectacular fountains outline its wonderful profile and make it the city with the largest concentration of historical, archaeological and architectural heritage in the world, with more than 16% of the world's cultural heritage and 70% of Italy's.

The heart of Catholic Christianity, Rome is the only city in the world to house a foreign state within its territory, the enclave of Vatican City: for this reason, it is often called the "Capital of two States".

The 5 most visited monuments in Rome:
The Colosseum;
The Pantheon;
The Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill;
The Trevi Fountain;
The Piazza Navona.

Tourist attractions:

1- The Flavian Amphitheatre (Colosseum):

Probably the most famous monument in the world and a symbol of Rome's greatness, the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum due to the colossal bronze statue of Nero that once stood nearby, stands at the archaeological heart of the city and, for almost two thousand years, has told an unbroken story of charm and magnificence.

It is the largest amphitheater in the world. Its construction began in 70 AD and was completed in 80 AD under the reign of Titus, son of Vespasian. The building was intended for combats, games between gladiators (munera), simulations of hunting wild and exotic animals (venationes) and naumachiae (naval combats). The Colosseum covers an area of 24,000 square meters and could accommodate approximately 50,000 spectators.

Currently, it periodically hosts temporary exhibitions and modern shows.

2- Pantheon:

A source of inspiration for the greatest architects of all time and always admired for its beauty, the harmony of its lines and the perfect calculation of the geometry of its masses, the Pantheon is, in fact, one of the best preserved examples of Roman monumental architecture.

Its history begins in 27 BC, when Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, ordered the construction of a first temple in this area, dedicated to "all the gods". Its current form, however, is due to Hadrian, who rebuilt it between 118 and 125 AD, enlarging it, inverting its orientation and opening a large square with porticoes in front of the new temple.

The Basilica houses the ancient Byzantine Icon of the Virgin and Child, donated by Emperor Phocas to Pope Saint Boniface IV in 609, on the occasion of the Dedication of the ancient pagan temple to Christian worship. What is most surprising about the architecture of the Pantheon is its size: the height of the building is equal to the diameter of the dome, just over 43 meters, a characteristic that reflects the classical canons of rational Roman architecture.

3- Fontana di Trevi:

The Trevi Fountain, the terminus of the Virgo Aqueduct, the only ancient aqueduct in continuous use today, is the most famous of the Roman fountains. Its name derives from a toponym in use in the area since the mid-12th century, regio Trivii, referring to the confluence of three streets in the square, or from the triple water outlet of the original fountain.

Leaning against Palazzo Poli, the fountain is situated in a large basin with a wide reef, enlivened by the sculptural representation of numerous plants and the spectacular flow of water. In the center dominates the statue of Oceanus driving the shell-shaped chariot, pulled by the wild horse and the placid horse, restrained by two tritons. The construction was completed by Giuseppe Pannini, who partially modified the reef, regularizing the central basins. After a restoration intervention in the years 1989-1991, the last major restoration took place in 2014, thanks to the financial contribution of Maison Fendi.

4- Piazza Navona: Piazza Navona is one of the most spectacular and characteristic urban complexes of Baroque Rome. The square is flanked by buildings that rose on the ruins of the Stadium of Domitian, whose track has preserved its shape and dimensions. The original shape of the current square, in fact, faithfully imitates the perimeter of the ancient stadium that Domitian built in 86 AD for athletics and horse racing.

Piazza Navona has been the site of popular festivals, races and jousts for centuries. From the 17th century until the mid-19th century, on Saturdays and Sundays in August, Piazza Navona, which at the time had a concave bottom, was partially flooded to provide refreshment and entertainment for the Romans.

The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone dominates the square. Next to the church is the Palazzo Pamphilj, which has housed the Brazilian embassy since 1960. Opposite the palace is the church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, formerly known as San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, built for the Jubilee of 1450.

Three fountains adorn the square: the Fontana del Moro, Fontana de' Calderari and, in the center, the Fountain of the Four Rivers

5- Piazza San Pietro: The heart of world Christianity, St. Peter's Square owes its characteristic elliptical shape to the imposing colonnade by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, commissioned by Pope Alexander VII Chigi, which is composed of 284 columns arranged radially in four rows.

Eleven years of work (1656-1667), more than 40 thousand cubic meters of travertine transported from Tivoli by land or pulled by horses along the river banks: with its colonnaded porticos, the most famous square in the world symbolizes the universal embrace of the Church, of the faithful, but also of "heretics [...] and infidels, to enlighten them to the true faith".

The square is dominated by the majestic St. Peter's Basilica, designed by Michelangelo.

Every Sunday at noon, a large crowd gathers in St. Peter's Square to watch the Angelus Domini and receive the Pope's blessing as he appears from the window of his office in the Apostolic Palace.

Curiosities:

- On Pentecost every year, a shower of rose petals falls from the top of the Pantheon to conclude the celebration of Corpus Christi.

- The Trevi Fountain was the splendid setting for the most famous scene in director Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita

Fontes:

https://www.turismoroma.it/it/luoghi/fontana-di-trevi

https://www.turismoroma.it/it/luoghi/lanfiteatro-flavio-colosseo

https://www.turismoroma.it/it/luoghi/pantheon

https://www.turismoroma.it/it/luoghi/piazza-navona

https://www.turismoroma.it/it/luoghi/piazza-san-pietro

Introduction:

Belo Horizonte is a Brazilian municipality and the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Its population is 2,315,560 inhabitants, according to the 2022 census, being the sixth most populous municipality in the country, the third in the Southeast Region and the first in its state. With an area of approximately 331 km², it has a diverse geography, with hills and lowlands. At a distance of 716 kilometers from Brasília, it is the second closest state capital to the federal capital, after Goiânia.

Surrounded by the Serra do Curral, which serves as its natural setting and historical reference, it was planned and built to be the political and administrative capital of the state of Minas Gerais under the influence of positivist ideas, at a time when republican ideology was strongly appealing in the country. It experienced unexpectedly rapid population growth, reaching over one million inhabitants almost seventy years after its founding. Between the 1930s and 1940s, industrialization also advanced, in addition to many modernist-inspired constructions, notably the houses in the Cidade Jardim neighborhood, which helped define the city's appearance.

Belo Horizonte is classified as a metropolis and exerts significant national influence, whether from a cultural, economic or political point of view. It has important monuments, parks and museums, such as the Pampulha Art Museum, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the PUC Minas Natural Sciences Museum, the Praça da Liberdade Cultural Circuit, the Pampulha Architectural Complex, the Central Market and Savassi, and major events, such as the International Festival of Theater, Stage and Street (FIT-BH), the Verão Arte Contemporânea (VAC), the International Short Film Festival and the International Meeting of Literature in Portuguese Language. It is also known nationally as the "national capital of bars", as there are more bars per capita than in any other large city in Brazil.

Name:

Shortly after the proclamation of the republic in 1889, the republicans of Curral del-Rei decided to change the name of the village. In a meeting in a house near the Boa Viagem Church, they suggested the name Novo Horizonte. At the suggestion of Luiz Daniel Cornélio da Cerqueira, a Portuguese teacher and responsible for teaching the village's children to read and write, the name Belo Horizonte was also considered. Discarded by the majority, the name was only adopted after a personal choice by the then governor, João Pinheiro. After the transfer of the capital, Belo Horizonte became known as Cidade Minas, until the name suggested by Luiz Daniel became official again in 1901.

History:

The recognition of the presence of indigenous peoples in the region was noted by Father João Aspicuelta Navarro in 1555, through a letter he wrote about the natives in the fields and forests. The indigenous population that inhabited the current state of Minas Gerais is related to the Macro-Jê linguistic trunk, the people known as Tapuias, a nickname given by their Tupi enemies. Indigenous occupations in the Minas Gerais territory in the 16th and 17th centuries were sparse and communities with the same identification occupied different areas. The peoples that lived closest to the current city of Belo Horizonte were the Cataguás, Goianás, Guarachués and Botocudos. The Cataguás or Cataguases were Tapuias and were an extremely relevant people for Minas Gerais, who had a presence in the territory since the beginning of the colonial period, since the state was known as Campos Gerais dos Cataguases and Minas Gerais dos Cataguases.

Geography:

Belo Horizonte has a very rugged terrain. Its highest point is located in the Serra do Curral, within the Serra do Rola-Moça State Park, with a maximum altitude of 1,506 meters. On the other hand, the lowest altitude is 673 meters and is located at the mouth of the Ribeirão do Onça, which flows into the Rio das Velhas. The official area of Belo Horizonte, according to the most recent resolution by the IBGE, is 331.354 square kilometers (km²), however the Belo Horizonte Municipal Information and Computing Company (PRODABEL), which belongs to the city government, provides a slightly higher value of 332.27 km².

Climate:

The climate of Belo Horizonte is classified as tropical with a dry season (Aw, according to Köppen). The average annual temperature is 22 °C; summers are moderately hot, with high rainfall, while winters are pleasant, with virtually no rainfall. Throughout the year, the minimum temperature in the coldest months is typically 15 °C and the maximum temperature in the hottest months is 29 °C. The effect of urbanization has caused the emergence of heat islands and changes in the circulation of cold air masses, which, during the winter, have been strongly blocked by the high pressure of the dry air mass, predominant at this time of year. The Serra do Curral protects Belo Horizonte from the strongest winds, but episodes of strong winds can still occur, with gusts of close to 100 km/h.

After World War II, Germany was divided into four parts, controlled by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. This also happened to the city of Berlin. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built, separating the western (capitalist) part from the eastern (socialist) part. It became a symbol of the Cold War and the division between two worlds.

The wall was guarded and prevented people from fleeing the eastern side. In 1989, with the end of the socialist regime in East Germany, the wall was finally torn down, and this moment marked the beginning of the reunification of the country. Today, parts of the wall still exist as historical symbols and symbols of freedom.

In Part 3, for example, the group appears in front of the famous Brandenburg Gate, one of the city's landmarks. In addition, the character Berlin represents mystery, strategy and elegance — characteristics that also resemble the city itself: full of history, culture and a strong past. In 2023, the spin-off series called "Berlin" was released, further highlighting the city's name and its symbolism.

At the beginning of the settlement process of the Italian peninsula, there were several civilizations that began to build small towns and villages, which, later, through the leadership of the Roman people, were united under a single empire: the Roman Empire.

The Roman civilization was one of the most powerful in history and held a large area of influence that included regions of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. However, several political and military disputes weakened the empire and culminated in its decline and dissolution. The ancient Roman settlements became, for the most part, kingdoms.

From the 16th century onwards, several kingdoms originating from the Roman civilization transformed themselves into city-states. They consolidated themselves as centers of trade and, also, of artistic practices on a global level, a historical period that became known as the Renaissance. The main city-states were Milan, Florence and Venice.

The economic growth and growing political importance of these cities generated a scenario of geopolitical dispute with European countries. The city-states suffered several invasions from countries such as France, Spain and Austria. Military vulnerability, as well as the desire to unite the various settlements into a single state, resulted in the unification of the cities, forming Italy in 1861.

The Italian Unification resulted in the creation of a country with a prominent geopolitical position on a global scale. Commercial activities and industrialization contributed to Italy's economic and social development. Throughout its recent history, the country has actively participated in several historical, political and military events.

In the First World War (1914-1918), it fought alongside the victors, called the Allies. In the Second World War (1939-1945), with the rise of fascism, the country allied itself with the Nazis, suffering a major defeat in the conflict and suffering enormous human, territorial and economic losses.

https://pin.it/2cqPtmy8i
