Colonial newspapers emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries, establishing themselves as essential weekly sources of news. Initially, these publications primarily provided updates from England, but they also became vital platforms for spreading political ideas and public announcements. The first major successful newspaper in the colonies was the Boston Newsletter, created in 1704, which set the stage for many future publications. However, government oversight of printing materials significantly slowed newspaper distribution. To pass this challenge, colonial printers developed ingenious methods for underground printing, allowing them to continue sharing important information and ideas with the public despite governmental restrictions and censorship.

The phase of technological advancement in the 19th century made newspaper production significantly more affordable, allowing for wider accessibility. Newspapers began to cover a diverse range of topics, making them more appealing to various communities. They included sections on crime, human interest, and entertainment, catering to a broader audience. One of the most famous newspapers from this era was The New York Sun, which was sold for just one penny. Although the low price limited profits, publishers devised a solution by focusing on advertising. This strategy aimed to boost revenue through higher ad sales rather than increasing the price of the papers.

Yellow Journalism was an era characterized by the sensational exaggeration of information in newspapers. Often, these exaggerated claims were misleading or false, yet they generated high sales rates for the publications. This focus on sensationalism significantly boosted profits and contributed to the industry's growth, but it raised serious concerns about credibility. To address these issues and restore public trust, publishers began hiring more knowledgeable and educated editors and writers. This effort aimed to improve the quality of journalism, presenting information that appeared more accurate and reliable, ultimately helping to combat the negative perceptions associated with the era of Yellow Journalism.
