I think the theme is that you have to be careful what you do, and it might effect things a lot more than you think. Like at the beginning when Prospero wanted to split up the crew (13-15) so he could find a way to usurp and the power back from Duke Antonio, and get revenge, so he could get his dukedom back.(17) Apparently he took it a little bit farther than that and caused so much more drama than his plan called for.

I think the theme of this play is that revenge. There are many instances of people getting revenge. One instance is of the team Caliban created to get back at Prospero for the horrible treatment(44). Prospero also is getting back at King Alonso for the fact that King Alonso usurps power from Prospero (48). On page 19, Prospero brings up the fact of revenge when mentioning Sickoracks. Ariel was trapped inside a tree due to the foul witch, and was able to get revenge with the help from Prospero.

I think the theme of the play is that you can have lots of things going on around you. But you have to focus on doing something that is truly meaningful, not just getting rid of your enemies and playing tricks on people. But, I mostly think the theme above that, is that if you keep trying, eventually you'll probably get what you want. I think this because Prospero has faced lots of problems in the play, but he is persevering through it. I think that he will also get what he wants back, Dukedom. So, getting revenge back on from Duke Antonio, which usurped power from him previously. Prospero is also always one step ahead of everyone else, which helps him. The following evidence supports my answer. During the conclusion of Act 4, Prospero says out proudly and with relief, "At this hour lie at my mercy all mine enemies. Shortly shall all my labours end," (54) This explains that Prospero has finally got what he wants at the tip of his finger. And he can now do it, whenever he wants to. During the high-point of Act 3, Prospero once again had joyfully said, "My high charms work, and these mine enemies, now are in my power. In these fits I leave them," (48) This clearly illustrates that Prospero is slowly working towards domination and power by using every resource he can, which makes him that much stronger, and power hungry to usurp from Duke Antonio. "Sprit, we must prepare to meet with Caliban" (52) This also tells us that he isn't afraid to attack his enemies head-on. All of the evidence above explains and proves my theme. This also, only explains the revenge of Prospero, not any of the other characters, although the other characters would like revenge too.

Forgiveness and the need for power are also important to the play.
On page 48, Prospero says,"My high charms work, and these, mine enemies now are in my power." (48 Shakespeare's The Tempest). This quote proves that Prospero wants power and is happy that he has control of his enemies.

I think that the story is about usurping power from people. Everyone wants to get power in the story. One example is when Duke Antonio and Sebastian plan to kill Alonso (pg. 30). Another example is when Caliban, Stehpano, and Trinculo planned to murder Prospero because they wanted power (pg. 54). Last example is when Prospero wanted his daughter to marry Ferdinand so Prospero could retake his dukedom. He said, "Mine enemies, now are in my power." (pg. 48)

(Version 2)
You can tell the theme is Revenge because through out the story the text tells you. Such as the quote on page 42 of act 3, "My rejoicing at nothing can be more!-" Rejoicing means great joy and by Prospero getting revenge he will have great joy. On page 48 of act 3, Prospero also states "My high charms work, and these, mine enemies, now are in my power". I think this means that he has his enemies in his control, which he can exact his revenge on them.
Lastly, on page 54 of act 4, "Let them be hunted soundly. At this hour at my mercy all mine enemies", Prospero said. I think this means Prospero will not show anymore mercy towards his enemies.

The theme in the Tempest that you see is revenge. Throughout the play you see characters (especially Prospero) talk about getting revenge. On page 48 Prospero says this "My high charms work, and these, mine enemies are in my power." Another time a character, Caliban talks about revenge is on page 44 said this, "Why, 'tis a custom with him in the afternoon to sleep. Then thou mayst brain him or with a log batter his skull." My final example is from Prospero on page 42 he said this, "My rejoicing at nothing can be more," to me this is saying that Prospero will be rejoicing after he has killed his enemies.

Another theme the play could possibly be is that revenge is sweet. You constantly see Prospero trying to get revenge on Duke Antonio, Sebastian, and King Alonso (pgs 32-33, 47). A few other characters want revenge too, such as Caliban wanting revenge on Prospero (43-44), or Ariel helping Prospero to get revenge on Antonio, Sebastian, and Alonso (47). That is why I think another possible theme for the story is revenge.
