Being Ready

Making sure you are ready and prepared for learning is one of our key values. This encompasses many things such as:

Having a named water bottle
A healthy snack for break (fruit or vegetables)
A pencil case with a pencil, handwriting pen, ruler, sharpener and rubber. Children may also bring in colouring pencils or felt tip pens if they want to.

3. Mathletics

1. As in previous year groups, we expect all pupils to read to an adult 5 times each week. On at least 3 of these occasions, they should read from their banded school reading scheme book. Books can be changed on any day so as soon as your child has finished reading their book, they can bring it into school and give it to either the teacher or TA who works in their class to change it.

2. Spelling lists will be given out on a Friday for a test the following Friday. Pupils should use a range of different techniques to practise these (techniques are taught every week in school). These spelling lists will often be a combination of spelling rules we are learning in school and Maths or Science vocabulary.

3.We expect all children to achieve a minimum of 1000 points in Mathletics each week at home. If children are still unsure of any times-tables or division facts, we ask them to practise these at home as a matter of priority as times-tables facts underpin so many aspects of maths. Your child's teacher will set tasks on Mathletics that link to either the learning the children have done in Maths lessons that week or past learning to consolidate their skills and inderstanding.

Protective Behaviours

Protective Behaviours is a very important part of our PSHE curriculum and we will continue to follow this programme in Year 5. We will be encouraging children to recognise their Early Warning Signs and identify a network of support they can turn to early on in the Autumn term. This will then be revisited throughout the year. It is really important that the children know that there is nothing too small or too big to talk about and that they feel there are trusted adults in school they can turn to. We also have worry monsters in each classroom which children can use if they feel anxious or upset and would prefer to write a note rather than talk about something straight away.
