Before the rain, the smell of hot tar and garbage bullies the air. There was no one on the street. Tessie was sizzling like a hot potato.

"Come on, rain." Tessie whispered.
People cared their plants kneeling around their garden. They sighed, under the sunlight. They were sweating. And mamma sinks onto the kitchen chair and sweeps off her hat. Tessie and her mom drank iced-tea. She can't wear her bathing suit. Miz Glick's phonograph played the same notes over and over.

In the long dry weeks, cats pant, heat wavers off tar patches in the boiling alleyway.
Also, vines were listless and Mamma is sagging over parched plants.
Besides, Mom's sweat trickles down her neck and wets the front of her dress and under her arms.
Even more, Miz Glick's phonograph is playing the same notes over and over in the dim, stuffy cave of her room.
Suddenly, clouds are rolling in, gray clouds, bunched and bulging under a purple sky.

When it starts to rain, the first drops make dust dance all around us.

After a moment, a deeper gray descends and the air cools down and the clouds burst. So all people in neighbor came out to enjoy the cool, fresh rain.
Eventually, our barelegged mammas dance down the steps and join us in the fresh, clean rain.
Strangely, the music from Miz Glick's phonograph shimmies and sparkles and streaks like night lightning.
Finally everything is misty limbs, springing back to life.

After the rain, the air cooled. The rain was everywhere. Tessie could wear her bathing suit. "Come on rain." She shouted. Miz Glick rushed out on her porch, Miz Grace and Miz Vera came next. They ran from their kitchen, squealing, whooping and dancing in the rain. Tessie's friends come out to the rain, too. They gulped down rain. Their arms and legs were wet with rain. They got a soaking and were soothed. They were laughing under the rain. Miz Glick's phonograph shimmied and sparkled and streaked like night lighting.
