Singapore was at a good location for trade. This is because Singpaore is situated at the narrowest point of the Straits of Melaka where trade is very frequent between China, Europe and India. All these countries wanted to trade with each other, so trade was very frequent and the fastest route was at the Straits of Melaka. So the British chose to set up a port in Singapore as it had a good location.

Response: Singapore, known as Tamasek, was at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula below Johor. Hence, since this location was between two powerful civilisations India and China in maritime trade. Since Singapore was also near spice civilisations in the Java and Sunda Straits too, many traders stopped by to settle and wait for monsoon seasons to arrive, which made it more populated too. Hence, when the British arrived along the influence of the Captain Daniel Ross, Raffles could notice that Singapore's geographical location had made many traders to settle here, which could potentially be lucrative to the British. Hence, if the British were to construct a trading port here, British traders could conveniently dock here in order to resupply without having imposed heavy taxes from the Dutch. Hence, if a British trading port as also built there, the monopoly of Dutch ports on the upper coastal regions of Melacca can also be stopped. Thus, due to the expedience Singapore could provide to the British，he built a trading port in Singapore.

Singapore's location was strategic as it was found in the narrowest point of the Straits of Melaka. Being at the narrowest point allowed Singapore's port to be defended more easily from pirates as there is less water surrounding it. Also, it was a better location than Melaka which was the biggest port of the Straits of Melaka, owned by the Dutch.

Singapore was chosen based on its strategic location. Singapore was located along the Straits of Melaka. The Straits was the narrow route along Southeast Asia and merchants found it convenient to use that route. Merchants arrive from countries like China or India and stop there to take a rest and also to trade with other merchants because Singapore was a free port and there was no tax. As other the Dutch had already colonised the other islands, Singapore was the only island left along the Straits that was in a good location. Therefore, the British decided to set up a port there.

Singapore’s location was picked because it was strategically placed along the British trade route in between China and india. This meant that traders from the west who wanted to trade with China would most likely pass by Singapore and stop there to trade. Furthermore, this helped give British traders who wanted to trade with China a safe port where they did not have to pay heavy taxes. This made singapore thrive as a trading port.

Singapore was on the southern tip of the straits of Melaka, at a strategic location. Traders would have to stop by Singapore to go to China to trade. The British were looking for a port as the Dutch occupied the straits of Melaka and taxed the British heavily when they were travelling to China. Singapore was also not occupied by the Dutch, so the British could build a port in Singapore and would be able to use it when traders were travelling to the China. Singapore was also abundant in resources, such as fresh water. The British would be able gain control of the trade with China.

Singapore was chosen by the British because of Singapore is on the Straits of Melaka. Traders will frequently pass by the Straits of Melaka, as it is in between the two trading giants, China and India. The Straits of Melaka are the fastest route between China and India, so most European traders will pass through the Straits of Melaka on their way to China. Singapore is at the narrower end of the Straits, so most traders will spot Singapore easily. Not only that, the traders can stop by Singapore for water and resources. Therefore, British chose Singapore for its ideal location in the Straits of Melaka.

Singapore’s location enabled the British ships to to avoid the Dutch’s heavy taxes. The Dutch were imposing heavy taxes on British ships at the Sundar straits for them to pass through. The British had to pay a lot of taxes in order to pass through the Sundar straits and they lost a lot of money there. Singapore allowed the British to pass through and rest there so they did not have to at taxes. Therefore Singapore was a great location to set up a port.

Singapore was located in the narrowest part of the straights of Melacca. Since it was located on the narrowest part of the trade route, it would be more convinient for ships on the other shore to reach Singapore to replenish their supplies and trade. By trading with people from different nations, Singapore would be able to obtain a wider vairety of exotic goods to trade for more valuable items. Furthermore, the straights if Melacca was the most popular trade route between China and India so Singapore was able to obtain goods from both nations. Therefore, Singapore was a good trade route because it was located on the narrowest part of the straights
