Context Enricher - Vanja
One main theme is the woman's place in society: the novel constantly brings this up. For example, in chapter 8, the characters (both male and female) discuss the way a woman should be, as well as the abilities she should possess. She should know how to sing, dance, paint, et.c.

Context Enricher- Rachel
Motifs: Mr Darcy as the
black sheep of the story. On one hand he doesn't conform to societal norms and many think him to be strange and an outsider, on the other hand, his role as an "outsider" can also be rooted in the fact that he suits societal norms to well. Pride and prejudice were two of the qualities many people during this time strived to attain, Mr. Darcy has both of these qualities, yet when presented without manners these qualities become poor and or undesirable.
Quote Master - Hedvig
"We can alla begin freely - a slight preference is natural enough; but there are very few of us who have heart enough to be really in love without encouragement " (p.20). This quote reflects society's view on marriage and love during this period. To make someone fall in love with you "naturally" was not necessary. Instead, you could "encourage" them to love you, by presenting your best sides. This makes love feel more like a "contract" about money and status, than the real emotions.

Word Chief - Vanja
Savage = uncivilized, barbarous
Unaffected = sincere and genuine
Inconsiderable = Too small or unimportant to merit attention or consideration
