From a military standpoint, neither side was considered victorious in this battle. The outcome though resulted in Lee's troops retreating from Maryland and the Union's territory. The newly appointed commander, Ambrose Burnside ordered more than 120,000 troops to cross the Rappahannock River where they made an attack on the right and left flanks of Lee's 80,000 troops at Fredericksburg. The outcome resulted an nearly 13,000 heavy casualties for the Union, as compared to 6,00 for the confederates, which caused the Union's morale to plummet. This three day battle had more than 50,000 casualties. During the war he Unions are able to hold their ground against the Confederates attacks. At the end of the war the though it has Lee retreating to the south with injured troops. STILL he manages to get away,instead of being pursued by the Unions. This to some extent leads to another two years because of how he was not forced to surrender. Abraham stated "We had only to stretch forth our hands & they were ours", probably in disappointment/frustration again that the men in charge are not taking enough action to defeat Lee. 60% casualties for the Confederates was a lot of damage.
