During 1920's, the stock market prices were rising. Investing in the Stock market was an easy way for people to make money. People would use disposable income and even mortgaged their homes in order to buy more stock. Because of this, the stock market expanded rapidly. Production was declining and unemployment rates were rising which left the stock prices higher than their real value. Wages were low and the agricultural economy was struggling because of drought and low food prices. President Hoover attempted to help stimulate the economy again but was restricted by his political philosophy. He believed that the government should have a limited role and that having excessive federal intervention would threaten capitalism and individualism.

In Nov 1932, President Hoover lost in the elections against Roosevelt. Although the people weren't sure of what Roosevelt was going to do but his campaign gave them hope. In the first 100 days of Roosevelt's presidency, FDR created the New deal to help deal with the economic crisis.

Emergency Banking Relief Act - main goal was to protect large banks from smaller weaker banks as a way for the banking system to stabilize.

Agricultural Adjustment Act - important for making sure the farmers weren't overproducing only for their produce to not grow due to drought and people not buying the produce.

Roosevelt also tackled unemployment creating the Civilian conservation corps that provided work on environmental projects for young men.

Canada was hit hard by the Great Depression because Canada relied too much on exports and trade, which decreased the demand on products. For example, in the 1930’s, automobiles sales had fallen 25% of the 1929 levels. With the collapse of automobile sales, millions of Canadians lost their jobs: unemployment rose to 27% by 1932. In addition, two main railroad companies alone laid off about 65,000 employees. As a result, an increase from 116,000 unemployed Canadians in 1929 to 826,000 by 1933.

"Last Hired, first Fired" was a common phrase used to refer to the situation with African Americans and the Great Depression. They were fired first in order to make room for the white men. This led to many African American protests for better economic, social, and political opportunities. This would later lead to the Civil Rights Movement.

Women began to work more as teachers, secretaries, telephone operators and nurses. The jobs however, were gender oriented and so women were only offered jobs that were considered women's jobs. Many times they were paid less than males as well.
