When Jonas first met The Giver, he noticed all of the books. The author writes that "Jonas stared at them. He couldn't imagine what the thousands of pages contained. Could there be rules beyond the community? Could there be more descriptions of offices and factories and committees?" (94). This quote helped me realize how oblivious and unaware Jonas and other citizens are in the community. Jonas was wondering what all the books could contain, which further shows how the community keeps its members in the dark about information that is not related to the community.

After The Giver told Jonas that he was starting to see the color red, Jonas became curious of why he couldn't always see colors. To show Jonas all the other colors The Giver told him to "Close your eyes and be still now. Im going to give you a memory of a rainbow." This quote reminded me of when parents or teachers would have to teach kids their colors and would use rainbows since rainbows have the main colors on them.

When Jonas was talking to the Giver about the communities right and making choices Jonas asked "'What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And chose wrong? He then moves on to ask what if “‘They chose their own job?’”(124) This quote made me realize that Jonas’s community doesn’t have the amount of freedom to make their own decisions that our world does. For example, we are able to choose our job and mate while Jonas’s community is prohibited to do that.

The giver explains to Jonas what is happening and says "There were a lot of colors, and one of them was called red. That's the one you are starting to see. Your friend Fiona has red hair.” This quote shows that there are many things Jonas and the community are clueless about. The community doesn't really know anything about actual life because they live in sameness. Not seeing color is one thing the community doesn't even know about. This also shows how much is kept away from the community for instance color.

-cassie

When telling readers that The Giver would sometimes send Jonas away, the author says that “when he arrived to find The Giver hunched over, rocking his body slightly back and forth, his face pale, that he would be sent away” (133). This quote helped me realize how painful being The Receiver will really be for Jonas. Being in that position, it is obvious that The Giver is suffering and probably has had to deal with it for years. It also made me wonder how Jonas will react to the painful memories. I also wonder what the memories are even of.
