In Chapter One, The Monkey King was illustrated to appear like a regular sized monkey just with simple details in his clothing which makes him look more significant amongst the other monkeys as he claims to be "The Monkey King", as well as a deity. After getting turned down at the dinner party in heaven and humiliated, he took the criticism and negative comments to work on himself and his authority to make a comeback and return to prove himself worthy of such a high position. Furthermore, in chapter four, The Monkey King spends so much time alone in his royal chamber without food or water, training on the twelve disciples which have shaped his character as a strong and powerful individual both physically and mentally. Now, one may observe that The Monkey King received a letter asking him to visit The Underwater Palace of Ao-Jun Dragon who is the King of the Western Sea, ordering for his execution. At his arrival, The Monkey King was able to display some key disciples such as shape shifting and the invulnerability to wounds when coming face to face with the guard who was commanded to execute him. What this indicates is The Monkey King was capable of proving himself as "The Great Sage" who is equal to heaven and has proven to other characters of high position in heaven that he is more than just a monkey, but a determined, strong-willed, overachieving, vigorous deity, who now appears as a large character with strength as he stands in heaven.

At the start of the book (Chapter 1) the Monkey King was an ordinary described monkey. There was nothing special about his appearance or himself in general, he looked just like the others. Once he got humiliated at the heaven dinner party, instead of getting sad he started working on himself and started working on Kung-Fu in the inner bowels of his royal chamber. He learned a lot; he didn't eat or drink anything for 40 days, he learned how to withstand fire, cold, drowning and wounds. He also disciplined a lot in his form. The monkey comes out of the chamber unrecognizable as the other monkeys stare and whisper in disbelief. The way that it shows that he has transformed is definitely through his physical characteristics. He does no longer blend in with the rest of the monkeys, he stands out. He looks more mature and taller, this shows a sign of self growth to the viewers as the author has made him physically taller to look more intimidating. He has also become slimmer, to show that he is fit as he has been working on a lot of martial arts.

In Chapter 3 monkey king psychological profile would be a brave and determination profile as he trained very hard to become a better version of himself. We can see that he wants to be more than just a “little monkey”, he wants to be appreciated for his capabilities and not his appearance. He is experiencing a lack of confidence and he wants the other gods to look at him the way he sees him however his stubbornness sometimes can get over him and it will cause trouble.

In the chapter 1, monkey king was discriminated by other gods and goddesses because he was monkey. Then, Monkey king revealed a decree which stated that all monkeys must wear the shoes and all monkeys complied, and then the monkey king denied the reality and adhere on training to change himself. The decree that all monkeys must wear the shoes is significant as this is a way of monkey king to be appealing to other goddesses and gods but not a efficient way to fix the prejudice of gods and goddesses in Heaven. Eventually, it changed the Monkey king violent and at last monkey king was reprimanded in chapter 4.

In this chapter, we see that the monkey king is beginning to change. This includes his personality, his speech, his appearance, as well as his abilities and skills. His psychological profile might conclude that he is full of vengeance and revenge, although at the same time, we see that he is wanting to change because he may have been hurt personally. We also see that he is trying to change because of being judged for his appearance, and he is trying to now “fit in” and be “better” than the rest of the gods. His psychological profile might suggest that he is trying to prove a point, that he is not just a monkey, and he is much stronger and better. We can see this when he tells the other monkeys that they must wear shoes, which is what the guard said to him when he could not come in for the dinner party. This might relate to real life when people of different languages are told to “speak English, this is America”. In this specific chapter, the Monkey King might be going through some conflicts because even though in chapter 1 it was mentioned that he was a deity and a king, he was mocked and made fun of instead, as people had a hard time believing that. Because of this, he devotes himself to become a new person where everyone respects him, and he proves it by executing some people. He is trying to send a message to the people that he is not just a monkey, and should be respected and praised like all the other deities.

The monkey king flies through the boundaries of reality by breaking the layout of the comic pages. The comic in the majority of the chapter is put in boxes and coloured in, however when the monkey king breaks the reality the author uses the layout to his advantage. The monkey king first goes through space until it eventually goes white then he breaks out of the box of the comic to a completely white page. This white page has a meaning of emptiness due to its lack of drawings and layout, possibly hinting to the fact of breaking the plot of the comic and being in a void and just being pure nothingness. This is effective because in majority of the book the entire comic is drawn with a layout and having the monkey king break out of it not only shows how strong the monkey king is but also how they were able to convey reality in the comic.
