Last night, Las Vegas and our country experienced the worst mass shooting in our history. Our thoughts go out to those who lost their lives and all those who had friends and family at the event.

What are your thoughts and opinions on what occurred last night? Let's make sure we keep our comments intellectually safe and compassionate in this time of grief in our country.

It is hard to believe that a human being would stoop this low, putting so much time, money, and effort into a pointless action that helps no one. Who does that person think he/she is to have the right to take another's life and not stop? I can only imagine how horrible the victims' friends and families feel, when it doesn't even concern me yet I'm so triggered. Things have to get worse before they can get better I suppose.

This is a very unfortunate event that makes me very upset, and its hard to believe that someone could do this but it happened and what can be done now? We don't know right now what his motive was but isis claims that he had converted to islam months ago. Many people think the solution to preventing something like this would be gun control but I do not think that is the solution and heres why... 1. guns don't kill people, people kill people (You could kill someone with literally anything if you want to, plus guns are not self conscious). 2. Though out history we have seen the effects of when a government takes guns away from its people, look up how the NAZI's took over Germany so easy. 3. Places like the UK and Germany have banned guns but the murder rate has risen since then. 4. Laws don't apply to criminals, if you take away guns from good people then how are they going to defend themselves against bad people with guns? 5. It is a right to own guns because the founding fathers knew that guns where an essential tool to protect the people from a bad government and other bad groups and people. Now I think the solution to this problem is more intelligence, we need to know more about people like him and we need to figure out a logical solution to prevent situations like this. I do think that their are certain people that should not own guns, but thats only one out of a thousand possible solutions because like I said if someone wants to kill, they will, even if its with a toothbrush or a watch. One solution that I do think would work is more people arm themselves. If more good people arm themselves then they can prevent events like this themselves, lets look at a recent example. In Texas not that long ago there was a patriotic event with a lot of people at it and isis decided to show up, but the terrorists where shot and killed by the people attending the event, not one person was killed except the terrorists, these heroic few prevented a massacre on US soil. Now imagine if there was an armed law abiding citizen at for example the night club shooting or the bridge attacks in the UK, the terrorists could have been eliminated and countless people could have been saved. Again I think we as a society need to learn from attacks like this and learn how to protect ourselves, not look at the government for a solution, but look in ourselves for a solution.

I thought that Europe would have more shootings and attacks because of all the refugees they are allowing in, but I guess not. My only question is what drives people to do this?

According from the news, the article claims that his motives and unclear, but ISIS claims to take part in the situation. However, it is yet still unclear and we should wait for investigations to find out how this even happened and learn how to prevent it.

I am really split on the issue surrounding this incident, Gun Control. On one hand, taking away guns won't solve the problem, people will still find ways to commit mass murders, but these mass shootings cannot keep happening. If we forcibly take away guns, then you would be trampling on citizens rights but taking no action to stop this would be a very illogical move on Americas part. It's a hard decision either way.

Quite late, but I do agree with the person below. Even with the precautions we're trying to take, there will never be enough to prevent deadly incidents without trampling on the peoples' rights. That said, there is at least one good thing to come from this incident and its the attention towards gun ownership. No, not about the "guns kill people" mantra, but that our fears aren't unfounded. Someone can just unload into a crowd without remorse, and there's little bystanders can do when its a machine gun or other automatic firearm. Is the U.S. going to do anything about it? No, but at least we're getting the ball rolling on an issue that even our president can't deny it was sick and horrific (though he declines to call it domestic terrorism).

Make it harder for people to purchase guns.

It's impossible to monitor the thoughts of every single person in the United States, so I think the way that we prevent tragedies like this in the future is by increasing Gun Control Laws and make it harder for people to purchase guns in the first place. One person does not need 47 guns in their possession. That by itself is sketchy. Nor does anyone outside of the military need military guns such as assault weapons. If someone's hobby is hunting with guns, they should be allowed to own a rifle, but not a military gun designed with the intent of violence. There should be more restrictions and background checks before people can purchase a gun. The loved ones of the Las Vegas shooter all consistently said that they never would've thought that he would use his guns for violent means. If they are telling the truth, then it's possible that the shooter may have had a mental illness. If so, then it's possible that if he was examined more closely, he wouldn't have been able to buy a single gun. Perhaps he still would've been violent on that night, but he wouldn't have been able to hurt so many people with short-range weapons before getting apprehended. All in all, if purchasing guns becomes a more difficult and drawn-out process, it doesn't violate the 2nd Amendment but it ensures that there are less guns in our country that could be used to hurt people.

I can't even begin to understand why someone would commit this violent crime and damage so many innocent lives. It makes me sick to think about people in this world and how we don't always think before we act. Humans can be so impulsive and when their actions start affecting the safety of those around them that is when it becomes a serious problem. Overall, I agree with everything that is being said by my classmates. I do think that we should arm ourselves and have the freedom to carry a device that has the potential to save not only our own self but those around us. However, I feel like posting gun restrictions won't always make a difference because people will always find a way to work around the rules and think of other ways to harm each other. For instance, carrying a bomb, knife, or even just a sharp object. We should be more aware of the people surrounding us and report suspicious activity as soon as possible.

I am not too informed about this topic as I do not keep up with the news or current events. However, I can not imagine why someone would want so badly to hurt themselves and others. Not only this, i can not see how people could not have seen the warning signs. I think in general it takes something really big to get the attention of people. They might see something wrong but will do nothing about it because they think it is not their problem and maybe if they ignore it the problem will go away. However, the problem only become larger and large as time goes by. It is only around this time that people actually start to look at the issue, but by that time it is much too late and the problem is much to large to handle. I agree with my peers. I believe that people should have the right to arm themselves but we should make it much harder to gain possession of such a dangerous weapon. Although it is true that guns do not just walk around killing whoever they please, we must also remember that without this lethal tool many of our fellow Americans would still be alive and going about their daily lives today. I think that we can make all the laws that we want but we can not assure that everyone will follow them. As someone said below, we should make it harder to gain possession of guns. Making more requirements for gun obtainment kind of reminds me of the drug testing for welfare. Many of the people they tested were completely clean and a lot of money is was wasted. There are some bad people in the world but there are also many good people. So this brings about another question: where should we draw the line? And is it worth it? I think we really need to think about this before we go charging into the situation. We should explore the possible outcomes and weigh out the pros and cons. Now I do not even know what I am talking about anymore...

I in addition to everyone else, am not very informed of the topic at hand. However, the small amount of knowledge that I have, I believe that terrorists should be addressed both in and out of our own country. I personally will never understand how anyone could do such an atrocious act or why they would ever want to. This, regardless of how unpredictable, should have been avoided through our government setting up more regulations on guns and who can buy or own them. This incident could have possibly been avoided through simply enacting more laws instead of being dumb and debating them to the point where nothing gets done in the end. Regardless of your political stance, this was a terrible terrorist attack and more precautions should be made to ensure the safety of us the people.
