Tunnel to another world

The two holes that our main characters travel down are both extremely similar, but also different. They are both pathways to another world. This is shown through the bright colors and a sort of magical presence. One difference between them is the fact that Coraline's tunnel can be reused and she can leave at will whereas Alice cannot leave at will, she has to go on an adventure to free herself. Another similarity is that the tunnels both come with a figure that allures the main character to the tunnel and leads them inside. In Alice's case it was a rabbit in a waistcoat, and for Coraline it was a jumping mouse. There was a difference in location of the tunnels as well. For Coraline the tunnel was located in her house whereas Alice's tunnel was located outside in nature.

Trickster: Adding humor to the story at a time of darkness or guiding with doubt. Comparing and contrasting Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland to The Cat from Coraline. The significance and choice of a cat may seem coincidental at first glance, but both cats represent more mysterious factors in the new worlds our protagonists enter. Just like cats themselves, these two represent independence as characterized in both stories. Cheshire Cat differs from The Cat because of its quirky attitude instead of being laid back as The Cat is. Although, both cats have a part of this magical realm within them, teleportation and invisibility.

The Use of Size

Size is used to invoke fear from the characters. When Coraline's "other mother" gets all big, it portrays her evil nature. Likewise, the Tall Flowers in Alice in Wonderland that scream at her terrify her. Alice causes fear in a pigeon when she eats the mushroom and her neck becomes super long and big causing the pigeon to attack her out of fear for its young eggs. Another instance of Alice causing terror and fear is when she grows huge in the rabbits house and all the animals throw rocks at her but they turn into cakes.

I connect to the story of Coraline directly back to when I was around her age. I never really respected my parents or what they did for me, and I never really even tried. They were doing so much for me that I didn't even notice that now when I look back at how I treated them, I laugh at myself. Now that I'm older and am old enough to understand, I now know how not to treat my parents. I understand the true value they have given to my life by not just being amazing parents, but being amazing people who I wouldn't trade for the world. I truly believe that because of the path that they have provided for me and the way they have shown me how to treat others, I will go far in this world.

From what I can remember, both movies contained characters that all had different quirks, ambitions, and ways to help the protagonist even when they are the trapped ones, even if they were the trapper. From the Mad Hatter and his quirky crew or Ms. Spink & Ms. Forcible to The Red Queen or the Other Mother, all of them wanted to help the protagonists in some type of way whether their plot contained evil or not. (To be clear, The Red Queen wanted Alice's beauty to be seen despite her size, and the Other Mother wanted Coraline, maybe for her soul but possibly love as well) The reason I mention this is that it reminds me of the society and environment I grew up in, a realm in which we're all trapped, with others assisting me using good or devilish ways. Despite the how, what, and where, I know that in the end only my decisions and actions will determine how successful I'll be to achieve a certain goal, whether it's to save the suffering like Alice or simply appreciate what I have like Coraline.

Not A Fem Fatale

Is it because they're strangers from another world?
Is it because they're different in size to the lack of buttons on their eyes?
Or is it because they're female?
Since the beginning of literature, males, and females have had certain portrayals, females were those damsels in distress waiting for a hero. Although it took time to change this societal perspective, the world went from women not having jobs to the opportunity of a female president. In both stories, the female protagonist is seen as a damsel in distress by nearly everyone else, but by the end of the story, they both become or perhaps reveal to have been a hero the entire time. Literature such as these two stories had been a part of that spark, the one that gave women a role model who can save other realms, promote independence, and say that strength lies in every single one of us.
