The women stayed home and did house work. They ran the farms, ruled over the Slaves and looked after their house. The girls stayed at home and helped their mother around the house. Some of the girls would go to school with their brothers. At age 6 the wealthy boys went to a private school while very poor boys didn’t go to school at all. At school they learnt how to read, write, recite poetry, maths, sing and how to play the lyre and flute. Women and girls had a private life because they stayed at home, while the boys had a more public life because they went to school.

Athens is governed by the Ekklesia. The Ekklesia is an assembly that all Athenian citizens were allowed to attend. At the Ekklesia they voted on important decisions such as whether or not they should go to war. The Athenian government is ruled by the people from Athens so people at the Ekklesia get a say in what happens. At the court there were no lawyers so the accuser spoke first and requests a punishment like fines, exile or even death. The accused tried to get a lighter punishment by defending his case. This type of government is called democracy and Athens was the first city state to develop it.
