The education industry has gradually improved in technology since AI's introduction

in our society. AI has been used for accessibility purposes, better assessment in

academic integrity, and creating a more personalized experience for students.

I chose this industry because AI is always seen negatively in the field of

education, but it has brought multiple benefits in learning systems that most don't

realize. As a student, it is always stressed by professors that artifical intelligence

is unacceptable to use. It can help a person learn better, along with providing

note-taking softwares and thorough explanations of concepts you might need

help understanding.

Using a note-taking software myself, I see the benefits of AI in Education.

Overall, the role of AI in Education has its benefits if it is used properly,

but can be abused very easily and put into a negative perspective.

Education- Assistive Technology

Assistive technology is present in softwares given to students with

disabilites and created to get an inclusive classroom experience and make them feel welcomed. Hearing impairments, dyslexia, and other mental disorders are considered when developing systems like text-to-speech and note taking.

As a person with ADHD I am given a note-taking software provided by SASC at SBU. Known as Genio, it allows me to record, create a transcript, and automatically type up the words from an uploaded powerpoint. Artifical Intelligence allows this program to properly function and exceeds its expectations.

The benefits of these programs are to allow a student to

reach their full potential no matter what setback they may have.

A common issue however, is that it may give a studentan unfair a

dvantage as they have access to resources others don't have. Along with this, students may make up a reason as to why they need assistive learning just to get a step above everyone else.

Education- Personalized Academic Learning

Through online programs, AI has allowed students to learn at their own pace, focusing on what needs to be improved and how to go about it. With a catered course, practice questions are tailored to your weaknesses and feedback is provided.

One way I have experienced this through my education is the use

of programs like quizlet and online practice questions. Specifically in

quizlet, the "Generate AI Practice test feature allows you to

upload documents that can be turned into practice questions. The video

above outlines all of the AI features in quizlet and its ability to improve your studying.

In terms of challenges that are faced in personalized academic learning, I think it genuinely takes away from the in-class experience. Teachers

jobs are being replaced, and self-studying is easier

than ever to do since you can go at your own pace.

This was relevant during the Covid-19 pandemic, where students were forced to use personalized

softwares to learn.

Education- Assessing Academic Integrity

Specifically with AI Chatbots, the main concern is Academic Integrity in the Education Industry. Student's are able to ask ChatGPT and Google Gemini questions about their homework or their writing pieces and will get feedback in return. While this can never be 100% ensured without crossing privacy boundaries, precautions can be taken to reduce the risk of cheating.

One example of preventing Academic Dishonesty is AI powered proctoring

systems. At SBU, we use lockdown browser, a great platform to prevent

the use of the internet and detect keystroke patterns. It recognizes the

screen you are using (Brightspace), and locks you from exiting a test until

completing it.

Another feature in systems other than lockDown

Browser is the use of the webcam to detect

facial recognition and eye movement. To ensure the

proper candidate is taking the exam, they must

be identified with an ID and must go through an

environment check. The video below dives deeper into

the benefits of online proctoring.

The main issue with online test-taking, however, is the

risk of being flagged along with having technical issues.

There is truly no way to prove that you were not cheating

which can negatively hurt your academic profile. Along with this,

if anything were to go wrong, it is very hard to prove that

your computer crashed or how to fix it if you aren't in-person.

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations

The future of AI in the Education Industry has the potential to improve

educational systems around the world. Those that aren't able to have access

to educational resources can learn from anywhere and personalized learning

plans make it easy for a student to pace themselves. AI is constanly becoming

more intelligent and we as a society have become dependent on using it

as a resource.

The ethical considerations in the educational field is that we must be

aware of the effect AI will have on our way of teaching and learning.

One consideration is the fear that artificial intelligence will replace the

human brain. Children are becoming reliant on robots and are shown to

have a decreased ability to socialize.

Using AI puts us, as a society, at risk for biases and job

insecurity in education. It is important that while teachers implement

AI in their classrooms, they make sure to use it as a supportive tool

instead of the center of learning.

AI is negatively seen in education due to academic integrity. As a result, students are becoming

lazier than ever and are unable to think or do an assignment themselves. ChatBots make cheating too easy and puts our society at risk of unnecessary competition for those that actually do assignments and those that rely on artifical intelligence.

AI in education has created a world where it is unitentionally replacing

teaching professions and other jobs related to the industry. There are cases

around the world of perosnalized learning programs in South Korea, and even virtual mentorships

in West Africa. Due to online coursework and efficient grading systems, teachers have

less work to do than ever and can teach from any location.

Along with this, it provides unnecessary competition for students

and raises the expectation to do well on tests and assignments. As a student,

we have seen an increase in testing averages on open-book exams. This makes

it impossible to compete against others who display academic dishonesty and makes students less

prone to exhert themselves.

One way some schools are tracking the use of AI is viewing history on school issued devices. This

is important to note since AI has become most prominent in the education industry and efforts are

being made to limit the use of it.

I think that overall, professors and educators only strain the negative aspects

of artifical intelligence to our community. Rather than focus on the positive

aspects of its effect in educational systems, we only think of the negatives.

Throughout my research process, I learned that Artificial Intelligence

is all around us in the education industry, even when we don't realize.

It is the backbone of how we teach today and it is constantly improving

softwares and technology, but I believe it is up to the teacher to show

students how to properly use it. The challenges I faced when trying to

research this topic was to find positive aspects of it since the media

portrays AI as destroying our schooling and fails to highlight

its achievements. I think our society should focus on controlling

Artificial Intelligence; with this, we will always be one step

ahead. We should use it as a support system, rather than

completely relying on it.
