After Odysseus crashes on Ogygia, Calypso quickly falls in love and treats him very well; she promises immortality and eternal youth to captivate Odysseus. After seven long years held captive, Zeus ordered Calypso to set Odysseus free, which she follows unwillingly. The website Mythica states, “Finally Athena complained of Odysseus' plight to Zeus, and Zeus sent Hermes to Ogygia to order Calypso to set Odysseus free. Calypso complied reluctantly” (Hunter). She is a nymph-goddess who lives on the island of Ogygia, who eventually falls in love with Odysseus. The Theoi Project describes Calypso as, “[A] nymph inhabiting the island of Ogygia, on the coast of which Odysseus was thrown when he was shipwrecked. Calypso loved the unfortunate hero” (Theoi). Most of the mythology surrounding Calypso comes from The Odyssey alone.
