Author Benjamin Grants article, “What is Gentrification” defines gentrification as “Gentrification is general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing urban district”. People who are targeted the most are people who live in poverty or low income houses. The people that target low income neighborhoods are usually wealthy people. Gentrification is happening because people who make more money go into poor neighborhoods for the rent and home price. The private developers and corporations see higher income as an opportunity to make money and they make deals with the local government to build or renovate more housing in that area. This results in private developers and business benefiting from this.

Usually, you can tell when a neighborhood is being gentrified when the rent starts to go up and rich outsiders come in order to live there.

Brooklyn, New York

The impact of gentrification in Brooklyn is similar to its impact in Oakland. In the movie “My Brooklyn” by Kelly Anderson, the main focus of gentrification in the movie is the Fulton Mall. The Fulton Mall was a community that brought together people from African and Caribbean low income communities. This place had its own culture with street vendors and local artists. In the film, when white residents who had no idea what the Fulton mall was about were interviewed they said things like “ it’s not place where I would shop”, “it might be a race thing” and “you can’t polish a turd” (Anderson, 2012). Private developers and city council government voted on shutting down the Fulton Mall in order renovate and improve the neighborhoods.

Oakland, California

In a report published by the housing organization Just Cause entitled, , “Development Without Displacement: Resisting Gentrification in the Bay Area” In Oakland, neighborhoods in the latest stages of gentrification have the greatest disparity rates between between Black and White mortality rates”. Being displaced or at risk of losing your home can affect the health of someone which puts them at a higher mortality rate.

Gentrification reminds me of…

Gentrification reminds me of is imperialism, because imperialism means the belief of expanding power by taking over foreign lands by military force, or negotiation in which, can only be done by an emperor or ruler. Gentrification and Imperialism are similar because imperialism is to take over a foreign country but with with gentrification, you are taking over the poor side of the city and not a foreign land. Imperialism can also be done by negotiation, and in this case it is done with money because the landlord's notice that rich outsiders have money and landlords raise the rent. This means that people who earn a minimum wage cannot afford to live in their own home.

After thinking about ways to prevent gentrification, I was thinking not raising the rent and leaving the community the way it is. This could be a really good solution and doesn’t mean that people who earn minimum wage don’t have to move and everything stays the same and nobody ends up losing. Another temporary solution would be that the community would have to come together and not let their fellow residents get evicted even if it means have to occupy the homes for the government to get them out.

This is an example of the rent in San Francisco as of June 2014, the rent might not be convenient for a person who doesn’t earn a good amount of money. This is one of the main reasons why people will want to move to Oakland since the rent is much cheaper there.
