I found this particularly interesting in light of Nick's blog post on empathy and it's limitations (See Paul Bloom, Against Empathy). LKY's view feels somewhat cold and detached in the context of the exhibition: how can we not respond emotionally to these images? Isn't the problem that the pervasiveness of these images has hardened our hearts already? Isn't part of the point of the exhibition to break past this over-familiarity? But there is an important point here too, I think: responding only with our hearts - 'bleeding to death' - helps no one in the end. That's why I think events such as this one are so important. In this one sentence, Le Pen manages to make an 'in-group' and an 'out-group' and expresses, in a very blatant way, her distaste for Refugees. The danger, for me, in this quote is the nationalistic sentiment that is so deeply ingrained in the words 'our country' and how easy it is to fall into the trap of a 'mine' and 'theirs'. It has been shown time and time again that once the distinction between 'us' and 'them' is made, in this case in reference to refugees, it is exponentially easier to make monsters out of the outsiders and so it almost amazes me how this one sentence is incredibly loaded and powerful. I suppose in the bubble I live in, comments like these seem extreme and rare and so this quote was quite shocking to me. A public figure can shape the views of a population, and in these dark times, is exactly what we need. 

Accepting 40,000 refugees in less than 2 years was unprecedented for North America. Developing programs to get families on track, sponsorship programs and instant access to public education. Canada has embraced refugees with outreach programs, fund raising and campaigns to bring even more in. One of the important ideas that this brings is how we use language and the certain connotations that are associated with a word. Refugee often associates with and attaches a characteristic of helplessness in it. In this way it is often fascinating on how are these deeper characteristics are attached to the word and if it's even possible to remove them.
