Wow, what a great book. The main character Emoni is a senior who deals with a lot more than the average 17 year old has to deal with. While anyone else would give up she continues to strive and graduate while doing the things she loves. Afro latinas are hardly represented and this book does a great job of voicing her identity while throwing in some Puerto Rican history.

A couple students were reading it and told me I should check it out. At first I thought it was too science fiction for me so I didn't read it right away. I waited until this school year during benchmark week to pick it up.
I am so glad I did! Once I read the first book I was hooked on Cinder and her story. It follows the story of Cinderella except in this case it's not only about falling in love with a prince. It's much more...

She was able to use her words to make an impact on her community. Bri only proves the power of words.
Great read! So great that I was able to finish it in one day 😅😊

April is national poetry month. Xiomara Batista is Poet X. She uses her poems as a way to get out all her thoughts. Xiomara learns to use her voice at the end of the story in a poetry slam. Having never felt heard and oppressed by her mother’s faith and strict rules she struggles to find herself and relate to her mom. Throughout the book you feel sorry for Xiomara and by the end you are rooting for her to win and find herself. It makes you feel anxious, sad, angry, uncomfortable but ultimately happy for Xiomara. Great Read finished it in a day and a half.

This book was recommended by a 7th grade student I had in class last year. I Love Trevor Noah as a comedian and his book about his childhood is amazing. He has went through so much in his lifetime. Things that would have brought anyone else down, he overcame. He uses his life in his comedy and is a great host on the Daily Show.

Burnout The Secret to unlocking the Stress Cycle By Emily Nagoski & Amelia Nagoski

There are so many great things about this book but my favorite is that it is all based in science. The sisters not only show you how stress effects women they give you the tools to manage your stress response. The gratitude practice is amazing, as mentioned when we do a gratitude evaluation it's always the generic- be grateful for what you have... well the ones mentioned in the book are not that. Instead it's be grateful for who you know and for how things happen to help ground you.
