Imagining I am the ECS....I could ask reflective questions to find out what aspects of challenging behavior the staff were discussing. I might ask what the coaches have already done around challenging behavior. How have the programs systemically approached challenging behavior. We would look at the ELOF, PFCE Framework, and the HSPPS to ensure anything the team plans fits within that guidance. I would likely ask if there are staff they work with that seem successful in how they are managing challenging behavior. I could help the coaches to understand relevant CLASS data specifically looking at classroom management and social emotional data. This would be a great way to also ensure the coaches are using a strength-based approach. It may also give some additional insight into why the challenging behavior is occurring. CLASS data could help to differentiate by age too - so the EHS programs have coaching tailored toward strengthening responsive caregiving practices throughout the year. There are lots of ECLKC resources about challenging behavior so I would ask coaches to reflect about why the behaviors seem challenging to the staff as they review the specific materials on ECKLC they may want to use. I would provide some PD focused on main concerns. I might remind them about the PBC resources that are available if they are struggling in their reflective practice with staff. It would be great to model and discuss the 5Rs somewhat throughout this work as the team moves toward some decisions about implementing their coaching plan. Finally - after much reflection and investigating resources that would be useful. I could ask some guiding questions as the coaches put together their year-long plan. Throughout the year, I would want to make note to check in regularly and see if there are additional needs. I would also want to be sure to specifically mention to the team when new resources are available. I will likely provide the coaches some foundational training around challenging behavior and provide additional training using and modeling the use of ECKLC resources. I would connect the coaches to resources available through other NCs and the NCPMI resources.

We have often heard that regional teams identify one person who is the point person for DLL supports - and we find that person keeps attending TTA meeting sessions about DLLs - but we are not always sure how much of the information gets to all the other members of the team.
