ivWatch Model 400 is a new FDA-cleared medical device that uses an infrared sensor on the patient’s skin to continuously monitor changes in subcutaneous tissue to detect early IV infiltration. If changes in the tissue are consistent with infiltration (fluid leaking into surrounding tissue) the device will visually and audibly alarm, alerting clinicians to the possible extravasation event. This device serves as an aid for constant IV site monitoring to reduce patient harm through IV failure.

ivWatch is an excellent product which could drastically improve the country’s current 50% IV failure rate when 80% of hospitalized patients get an IV. In clinical validation studies, the ivWatch detected 80% of infiltrations on average 29 hours before a clinician 95% of the time. ivWatch is useful across multiple settings including: pediatrics who have fragile veins and frequent movement, the OR where drapes may cover IV sites, the ICU where critically ill patients may not be able to communicate, oncology where medications are highly vesicant, and the emergency department where clinicians are prioritizing multiple simultaneous patient needs. Every IV failure is a potential risk for loss of limb through tissue necrosis, prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare cost or even a patient's life. This continuous monitoring device revolutionizes IV safety while providing clinicians with peace of mind.
