The first commandment, "thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people," and the tenth commandment, "thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans." Both of these guidelines are essentially saying to use the computer to be kind and courteous to others. However, cyberbullying is a modern problem that is mostly done by the fingertips of students.

Here are some statistics from  DoSomething.org that highlight the ways students violate these guidelines:

• 37% of people ages 12-17 have been bullied online, with 30% saying it's happened more than once
• 95% of US teens are online, usually accessing through their mobile device, which makes it the #1 method of cyberbullying
• 23% have admitted to saying something mean or cruel to another person online 
• 60% of young people stated they have witnessed someone getting cyberbullied, but most have not intervened 
• Instagram is the social media site where most young people report experiencing cyberbullying, with 42% of those surveyed experiencing harassment on the platform

Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid (without permission).

Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization or proper compensation.

Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output.

Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you are writing or the system you are designing.

It's easy to think none of these violations are harmful because there is no physical harm being done.
Teenagers can behave impulsively, irrationally, and have biological differences in the way they think. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, "Scientists have identified a specific region of the brain called the amygdala that is responsible for immediate reactions including fear and aggressive behavior. This region develops early. However, the frontal cortex, the area of the brain that controls reasoning and helps us think before we act, develops later. This part of the brain is still changing and maturing well into adulthood."

We can take the following actions:

• Teach digital citizenship
• Create a code of conduct and have students sign a contract 
• Inform parents of what to look for at home 
• Partner with parents to provide consistent information on ethical, safe computer use
• Start a school club to get students involved in keeping computer use safe amongst their peers
