The storms in Spain caused school closures and train cancellations on Wednesday and flash floods in Valencia killed more than 220 people and destroyed thousands of homes. In Spain's Southern Malaga province, streets were flooded, but there were no reports of any deaths around that area. Spain's weather forecaster AEMET put Malaga on red alert saying that there was up to 70mm of rain that accumulated in an hour. Some experts say that drought and flood cycles are increasing more, as there is more climate change. In response to the floods in Spain, the European Parliament has debated measures to strengthen the EU's resilience to extreme weather events, similar like these to provide support to those who are impacted by the disaster.

I personally believe that this is crazy because I didn't expect flash floods to kill more than 220 people and destroy thousands of homes. 70mm rain is also nearly 3inches up high, meaning a single step would make your whole shoe very wet, which I despise. I think it is a great thing that the European Parliament is thinking of measures to strengthen EU's resilience to extreme weather events because people often end up with little support after their homes are destroyed. I hope they do indeed end up agreeing to make measures to support others though.

Summary: Pete Hegseth who Donald Trump announced as defense secretary said women shouldn’t be allowed to serve in combat roles. Now many female veterans are fearing about the progress they made all these years. There was already a ban before from serving in ground combat but was lifted in 2013. Hegseth had accused the military of lowering their standards for women which many female veterans denied saying that some women maybe unqualified but so are some men and women who do qualify should be given the equal position.

My reaction: I think Pete Hegseth is wrong for saying women shouldn’t be allowed to be in combat roles because it is very sexist and women have already proven themselves to be capable.

Australia will require social media platforms to act to prevent online harm to users

Australia is planning on making social media platforms act to protect their users from bullying, predatory behavior and inappropriate stuff. The Online Safety Act would ban children younger than 16 from platforms like X, Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok. Critics think that if Australia removes children from these social media platforms the owners of the platforms would not be motivated to fix this problem. According to this article social media platforms cause children to take their own lives and develop eating disorders due to the amount of bullying on these platforms. Tech companies have already been made legally responsible to keep their users safe by Britain and the European Union. Businesses would be required to legislate “fix” their platforms so it would be safer for children, this means they can not say they will fix something but then forget about it but instead they need to keep identifying possible threats to children using their platform. It is unknown when the duty of care legislation will be implemented into the Parliament or the punishments for it yet.

Personally I agree with the critics in this case because if Australia already removed their Children from these platforms I don’t see a reason why they should fix their platforms if Australia already removed their people from it, like the critics said there is no motivation to fix the issue. I highly doubt many teens and children would want social media to be banned in their country because social media is a big part in the daily lives of kids and they might’ve made some good friends there.

President Trump appoints Matt Gaez as attorney general. His choice to choose Matt was reflected off his promise to make punishments fair. Matt Gaez needs 50 votes from the senate. The senate from the republican side doesn't like Matt Gaez very much. Donald Trump uses the constitution to appoint Matt Gaez.

I honestly don't really care about politics so I don't really know what to feel about this. Donald Trump has fulfilled his promises so I believe he made a good choice. As for the politicians, if they don't like someone it doesn't matter. What matters is if they can do their jobs. In the end what I care about is the prosperity of the nation.

This Video talks about New York City's new Migrant return program where they are sending around 4,500 Migrants back to Texas with free one-way tickets. The reason why is because Texas Governor Greg Abbot had sent around 30,000 Migrants to NYC previously which costed NYC millions of dollars which indicates how complex and costly the response is to Migrants. Despite identifying as a sanctuary city, NYC leaders don't want Migrants to stay, exacerbated by the temporary nature of shelter stays which require asylum seekers to reapply for housing once their stays expire. The video also delves into the fact that the economics and employment challenges continue to increase in NYC as even though there are 200,000 Asylum seekers in NYC, only about 2,000 have found employment, which suggests a disconnect between reported jobs available and actual job placements for migrants.

Personally I believe that this project is very expensive and negatively impacts NYC and the only up side to the Migrant return policy is the fact that it opens up shelter stay spots and maybe causes less stress in employment. Though in my opinion this doesn't help at all as there is an approximate 200,000 Migrants and taking away 4,500 barely impacts employment and housing. I also believe that it isn't tackling the main problem which is that the Government lied to the Migrants as they told them that they had several opportunities and housing options for the migrants but then in reality they didn't have nearly enough for the migrants to find opportunity and stability which is why they migrated to NYC. Overall, I believe that this video is very intriguing and shows how the Government overestimated their abilities and thus causing several people in search for opportunities to be left on the streets where nowadays is getting more dangerous every day.

Many illegal miners were seen. It is unknown how much illegal miners there are. Sabata Mokgwabone a spokesperson stated that three miners had told them that there were about 4,000 illegal miners and police say it is in the hundreds.Their even was a dead body but the government refuses to help because they want the miners to leave. Plus they don't want to help illegal miners which has been a problem for decades so they want "smoke them out"

I believe the government should help the miners. Although they are mining illegally they are still their people. The government waiting it out is only harming the miners since there was even a dead body and is inefficient instead they could use force to make the miners leave. Plus we don't know what the miners are going through. Maybe they can't find other jobs so this is their only option and they are providing for their families back home. The government could provide jobs for them which not only do the miners earn money ; they could also be building new homes so the government also wins too.

Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. presidential election, defeating Kamala Harris with a final count of 312 to 226 votes. Now that Trump is moving back into office, he intends on making plans for the country. One of his goals is to stop inflation, which increased vastly during Joe Bidens presidency. Trump says he will work to bring inflation down even further. He also wants to make tips tax free, so workers who rely on tips get to keep the full amount of what they’re tipped, without being taxed. Lastly, Trump is planning new taxes on foreign products to reduce how much the U.S. buys from other countries. Most foreign goods would have a 10% extra charge, making them more expensive. So to fix this, Trump decides that imports from China, might go up to a 60% charge, making it overly expensive so Americans can focus on more american made products and less on foreign products.

I don't like politics so I didnt care who won. But I like the idea of inflation going down. I don't agree with Trump making foreign products more expensive, trying to promote American products because it gives the country a bad image for doing a decision like that.

Schools want to ban phones. I would strongly disagree with this because if the school devices are not working on a specific day and it's important, students can just use their own technology like their phone or iPad. Another reason Is that it helps students focus better on work assignments. And it ensures parents that they can safely communicate to their child during emergencies. They could also use their own technology to search up stuff on their own instead of bothering the teachers. Students can also learn new apps such as Calculator84 and their devices and many more. That's why I would say students should be allowed to use their iPhone iPads in class(with the teachers permission).

In September of this year, Super Typhoon Yagi hit China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Super typhoon Yagi was the deadliest typhoon since July 2023. This may not sound like a long time but in reality, every few months a typhoon forms in the pacific and South China Sea and this was the most costly and deadly out of the 3 major typhoons since July 2023. Typhoon Yagi caused buildings to fall over in Vietnam and China, caused landslides, and more natural disasters in the region. In just a few days, 44 people died to landslides alone and one 51 year old was lucky to survive however his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren were buried under and died to the landslide. Buildings in populated areas of Vietnam and China were torn open through gaps in the window structures and got blown away while some even falling over due to their foundation not being strong enough to withstand the winds. Even boats were no exception to being swept away and buried under as local authorities found 41 fishing boats being fully submerged underwater by the storm. More than 50,000 Vietnamese locals of seaside towns and villages were evacuated. Before hitting Vietnam (The main area of damage), the Typhoon briefly hit the island of Hainan in China which is a popular tourist attraction in China which caused lost revenue and further damages. I feel sad for those who lost their loved ones in this typhoon and specifically to the 51 year old who lost his family. My initial reaction was surprise to how a typhoon (basically a hurricane) can deal such damage and even tore open buildings.
