It was built as his private residence, but stands today as one of the grandest structures in India. The complex also has the iconic stepwell that dates to 1405 AD and is known as Navlakhi Vav. While it is almost impossible to accurately depict the value of such an imposing and gargantuan landmark of the country, estimates state that property prices in this area may be anywhere between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000 per sq ft. Taking that into account, it should be mentioned that the palace complex spans a whopping 700 acres, which works out to be a massive 3,04,92,000 sq ft. A beautiful palace which you cannot avoid visiting when you are at Baroda. One of the finest residential palaces that you can see. The palace in itself is grandeur personified. We visited the palace in the morning. Tickets for visit are available prior to the entrance. You can choose to see either the palace alone or combine it with the beautiful attached museum. There is an audio guide available one you are inside along with demarcated areas telling you more about the place. The multiple rooms inside the palace have many stories to tell and gives you a glimpse of the grand life lived by the royal family. The armor room itself is breathtaking. For people interested in art and paintings, do visit the museum too, which a small quick drive away. It has some lovely sculptures and paintings including Raja Ravi Varma and European paintings.
