<title>being part of something is so important, and it should be a given. more can be done to ensure belonging. This needs to be factored in to the curriculum, and not let the pressure of teaching and delivery take over. As one speaker said the first few weeks set them up for the following three years.</title>

<title>Embedding engagement, and being present. Having space to allow for discussion. We have set up break outs into groups with some success. The students are missing each other and no matter who they are paired with the have embraced these sessions. The difficulty is engaging those who are of another language or culture who find it hard to fit in. plus timezones and wifi issues have not helped them.</title>

<title>first year we host icebreaker sessions, but 2nd and 3rd yr has been a challenge. More getting to know you Student and staff (outside their set groups) would help this. Encouraging them to take ownership of their community too - setting up panel discussions / talks they want to run and be part of. Providing safe spaces to encourage discussion about concerns. Foster a structure of trust and transparency and a platform for listening.</title>

<title>We have shared slides of our staff and what they have been doing during lockdown to show a more human and personal side to us. We encouraged year 1 students to do this as well and present before their peers online and offline. Last terms we set up private channels on Teams for groups for a collaborative project: we found that the groups who used it for more than work but it a more social way benefitted most from it. We will be setting this up for Year 3 to support and motivate each other on their independent projects. We tried to have a few socials with student where we meet them for a drink and a chat but this seemed to work better for the third years who already knew us that and the Year 1s and 2s who didn&#39;t quite have that rapport with us. </title>

<title>Belonging online is more difficult now as the current policy of encouraging students to attend has created a divide between those attending and getting more contact time with the staff and interaction with other students, vs those who are interacting solely online and feeling isolated. It is no longer a level playing field anymore....we now heading for a lockdown and we will be dealing with a number of lonely students, some living on their own. </title>

<title>Online space offers every changing behaviour/interaction options to appear &#39;friendly&#39;. As a species, we would not survived if we were not friendly, giving and kind to strangers. I found it is funny to discuss the need of &#39;belonging&#39; as if it is something we get to pick and choose. As if it is something you do only after your others needs are met (disagree with both content and hierarchy of Maslow&#39;s triangle). </title>

With educations role as a place to foster individual and community growth, how can we more effectively prepare students to gain the skills required to address further inequality that they will likely experience later in life?</title>

<title>First and foremost creating a positive and supportive environment where real learning can take place--mistakes can be made, questions asked, things made clear if any doubt arrises. Getting to know the students so you have a larger picture of the unique challenges and assets each person has is a continual process. LISTENING! When students are faltering, reach out in empathy rather than a judgemental or disciplinary tone. Solutions arise from dialogue not confrontation. Create positive social spaces where staff and students can interact and share ideas, experiences, concerns in a non-formal environment -- I continually hear from prospective students that the &#39;academic language&#39; around the course material is intimidating, so de-mystifing is essential </title>
