Working conditions back in the 1800s where hard but Australia was known as “working man’s paradise” as people only work 8 hour days compared to Europe who work much longer and in more dangerous conditions. Manual labour was a lot of hard work and long tiring days, with little pay. Manual labour included physical labour such as trade, construction of buildings, or work in the maintenance and medical industry. The middle-class usually worked in professional workers or white-collar and genuinely did not involved much physical work but they were paid more.

In 1868 the final convict ship docked in Fremantle, Western Australia. 168,000 British prisoners by the end of 1868 had been boarded and shipped over to Australia to be working slaves. Many prisoners did not even make it over to Australia. Some boys as young as eight where shipped over for the smallest crimes. Flogging was a big punishment used by the British. Flogging was either used to punish the convicts for their crimes, trying to escape or neglecting to work but was also used to try and get information out of the criminals.

There were 4 main types of punishment implemented to the convicts these included:

1. An eye for an eye, this is where the criminal would suffer the same pain inflicted on their victim.

2. Deterrence, this was when the criminal would be hung in public, this was used to show the public what would happen if they did break the law.

3. Rehabilitation, this was when criminals would be sent to an education program to try and turn them away from crime instead of punishing them.

4. Social protection, this is the final punishment where criminals would be sent to Australia to work and serve over there so the people of Britain would be safe.

Mary MacKillop devoted her life to helping others over herself. Due to her own experiences with little to no money, she really wanted to help the less fortunate who could not afford schooling. Mary opened many schools for the poor providing education and helping those to learn about the actions of Jesus and God. Mary spread the teachings and words of God. She helped the poor just like Jesus. She educated people about Jesus just like Jesus did about God. Through he kind actions and teachings Mary spread love just like God and Jesus.

What was the Church’s response to 19th Century conditions with The Condition of Labor (Rerum Novarum), from Pope Leo XIII in 1891?

SECTION 1. Part 20 Justice for workers: Zali, Anashe & Chloe

The employer should at no time employ someone who is incompatible with the efforts and abilities that the job requires. it is the principal duty of the employer to look after the health and wellbeing of their labourers. The prosperous employers should be aware not to abuse their power against the vulnerable poor and needy and who can’t provide for them self, as it is the law they shouldn’t abuse the poor for personal benefits or for profit. To not deprive anyone of their right to their wages as it is an atrocity and a crime to both God ,Heaven and the society. Finally the wealthy must religiously provide labourers with a fair wage as the labourers are weak and unprotected.

SECTION 2. Part 22 Responsibility of the rich: Jasmin, Lily, Tara and Fiona

We the members of society must practice our right of private ownership as this is not only lawful but essential. St Thomas Aquinas’ message to the world is share our abundance to those who are in need. When we provided for ourselves and our families we must give our remains to indigent. We, the Christians must be charitable as it is our duty which is not a human law. The laws and judgments of humans must align with the laws and judgement of Christ the true God, so that we can urge others to follow His ways and practise almsgiving. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

SECTION 3. Part 34 The common good, : Lily, Amber, Shakyra, Bridget.

Although everybody should contribute to the common good which is shared so willingly, not all are able to contribute the same amount as others or to the same extent. There are people who enforce the law and administer justice, and those who create the rules for those who enforce them and keep everything in order when calm and in peace, and defend good in times of conflict. Those who work to benefit the nation in an important job- through there their actions, and how they use their strengths, the development of the land, and in the industry of trade and labour of work. Fairness, therefore, asks that the interests of the wealthy working class should be cautiously looked at by management, so they contribute to the common good and the community so they can enjoy the benefits that they create such as living in a house, having clothes, and living healthily, due to this they would find there life more enjoyable and comfortable.

SECTION 4. Part 37 Protection for the Poor: Abby, Cilla, Emma, Emilie, Miller

There should be laws to protect people rich or poor.

When it comes to the government poor people are pushed to the side and the richter people have more power. Rich people don't rely on the state unlike the poor.

SECTION 5. Part 42 Hours and Expectations: Molly, Olivia, Kealey, Sophie and Lara.

The first thing to recognise is that capitalists use their labourers like slaves to contribute to their own riches. It is not fair to wear out men with excessive labour which harms their minds and bodies.

Everyday work should be not hold someone accustomed to more hours then they can withstand.

People who work physically draining jobs (eg. mining) should have less hours than those who work less physically demanding job (eg. desk jobs).

It is unfair to give the work of a full grown man to a child as they do not have the mental and physical requirement to meet such a job. Children should not be placed in physically demanding jobs until they are properly developed.

SECTION 6. Parts 42 & 45 Hours and Wages: Charlotte C, Charlotte D, Caitie & Katie

If the masters are going to work their employees really hard they need to give them proper rest for their minds and bodies.
The Masters need to allow their employees to both practices their work and religion.
The master and the employee need to be the same page according to money and wages. The employee needs a sufficient amount of money to support his family.
If the master demands harder work from the employee with no extra money involved he is exploiting the employee.
