Why is it important to work with art, if we want to foster democratic citizens?

The engagement with art and culture can provide students with important competencies, both in terms of their personal development and their preparedness to participate as competent citizens in the democratic society (Kulturstyrelsen, 2013, p. 3). It can benefit students to work aesthetically, thereby strengthening their creative abilities, cultural knowledge, and cognitive competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving and imagination.

Furthermore, art and culture also play a significant role in relation to identity. It is through art, culture, media, theaters, movies, and music that individuals construct their identities (Kulturstyrrelsen, 2013, p. 5). Culture and art provides students with experiences and impressions, not only for the present but also traversing historical epochs.
