As an actress, presenter, and model, I, Queeneth Adebisi, am driven by a deep passion for storytelling and entertainment. Growing up in an African community where acting was not always seen as a respected profession, I aim to change that perception. I want to inspire and encourage the Black community to recognize acting, modelling, and entertainment as professions that deserve the same respect as fields like medicine, law, and other established careers. Through my work, I strive to bring joy and connection to others, just as the world of film and TV has done for me since childhood. Acting is not just a career for me—it is a lifelong passion, one that requires dedication, years of training, and the ability to touch hearts and minds. My mission is to show that entertainment is a profession that takes immense skill, commitment, and respect, and it has the power to transform lives.

HOW I WANT TO LUNCH MY CAREER IN PRESENTING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING

Welcome to my short introduction on how I plan to launch my career as a presenter and public speaker. My passion for presenting is the driving force behind my goal, although making money is also one of my objectives. However, my love for the craft far outweighs my desire for money and the fame that may come along with it.

I have always seen myself as a brand, and I believe building that brand—especially on social media platforms—is crucial. Social media makes it easier for people to search for your name and view your profile, providing a mini-introduction to who you are and what you do.

Crittenden (2019, p. 2) states, “Branding is more than just a logo, a few graphic elements, colour, and slogans.” This quote means that branding is more than just a colour theme, logo, or slogan that you might be known for. It’s about who I am as a person and everything I stand for, both the good and the bad.

During the presenting workshop class, I decided to start my career with the help of social media. By using platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and others, I plan to showcase my ability to present and speak publicly.

I started my own YouTube channel called Queeneth Adebisi Vodcast, which focuses on lifestyle, relationships, gossip, and any random topics you can think of. On this channel, I also decided to run my own podcast/vodcast, where sometimes I bring in a guest to make the content more engaging. If no guest is available, I post educational videos like makeup tutorials and vlogs. Starting this channel is my way of putting myself out into the world and showcasing my ability to conduct interviews, host a TV show, and manage a podcast. It also helps demonstrate my confidence in front of a camera. Additionally, this channel serves as a portfolio for me as a presenter. As my channel grows, I can also monetize my account, which will enable me to start earning money.

Emden and Becker (2003, p. 13) state, “Listening is, then, essential to our development, but, as we said earlier about communication skills in general, most people aren’t very good at listening.” This book discusses effective communication, and from this quote, I’ve learned the importance of listening to others, especially my audience. Understanding what they want from me and what they expect, even in small things like responding to their comments, creating content they request, or providing information, when possible, is essential. For example, there was a time I posted a video on my YouTube channel, and several people commented asking for the name of the product I used. I replied to their comments, which not only satisfied their requests but also helped me gain more subscribers.

Now, TikTok affiliate marketing has been helping many young presenters like me get noticed by big brands, giving us the opportunity to make money while also showcasing our ability to sell products to the public on camera. I have gotten into this, and it has been working well for me. Currently, I am not making a significant amount of money from TikTok affiliate marketing, but it has been providing me with the visibility I need to break into the presenting and influencing industries. I am starting to receive free products from small brands to advertise for them. While doing this, I have been building my confidence and preparing myself for television presenting. I am working on building my profile as a TV presenter with the help of social media.

I have also been applying for presenter jobs on TikTok with fashion companies, although I have not been successful yet. However, I will keep trying and plan to start applying for jobs with platforms like QVC, as well as presenting positions with BBC, ITV, and others. Additionally, I have volunteered to be the presenter/host for my friend's birthday event, which will be happening in May. This will give me the opportunity to put myself out there as an event host/presenter and start working as a freelance presenter, in case I am unable to secure a permanent presenting job.

Bibliography

J.
MY CAREER REFLECTIVE ESSAY

It’s been three years, and now my BA degree in Media and Performance is about to come to an end. These three years of study have been filled with love, dedicated time, and emotional moments when I felt overwhelmed by assessments, university life, and personal issues. There were times I thought I would be depressed, but looking ahead and imagining where I am going keeps giving me the courage to keep moving, even when dropping out crossed my mind a couple of times. Sometimes I feel there is no road ahead in this path I have chosen, but the more I keep moving and attending classes, the clearer the road ahead becomes. Bassot (2023, p. 16) states, “when life is a little busy, it is all too easy to be distracted, and before we even realise, we have wasted precious time on activities that might appear urgent, or that we have deceived ourselves could be important.” Although in this text the author uses this statement to reference how we can become busy and carried away with other things, preventing us from having time to self-reflect, this statement also suggests that time flies. If I don’t find time to take steps toward applying for that job, taking the necessary training, or doing something positive toward my chosen career because I’ve been busy focusing on other things I assumed to be important, I will end up not achieving my goal.

In this essay, I will discuss the workshop classes, what I learned from them, and the career path I plan to follow after university.

First, I will begin by discussing the career paths I intend to pursue moving forward: Acting, Presenting, and Film Production. These three fields are careers I strongly believe I will excel in, as they not only align with my passions but also feel like they are meant for me since I was a child. During these three years of study, I feel I have gained significant knowledge that will help me advance in the entertainment industry and further my career. For example, I’ve learned about the different types of presenting, such as Selly Telly, autocue, street interviews, intros, outros, vox pop, and vlog presenting styles.

The presenting module has also helped me launch my YouTube channel, and the workshop I attended contributed to building my personal brand. Let’s talk more about the workshop. Although the presenting workshop lasted only for an hour, I learned a lot in that time. It helped me better understand how to build myself as a brand and figure out what kind of presenter I want to be. I’ve decided that I want to be a Selly Telly presenter. So, how do I land a job in Selly Telly? It’s about applying for positions with networks like QVC and starting to build a presence on social media platforms like TikTok. TikTok has helped me grow my confidence in selling various products, from fashion items to household equipment, toys, and more. This has allowed me to engage with my audience and attract the attention of brands and companies, which is helping to grow my social media presence.

The workshop also taught me how to understand my audience, communicate with them, and maintain a relationship with them. So, what are some ways to maintain communication and build a relationship with my audience? One way is by replying to comments, giving genuine reviews about products, and creating content based on my audience’s requests. For instance, there was a video I posted on my YouTube channel titled "How to Remove Your Microblading." In this video, I shared my personal experience with microblading and explained how I removed it. Some of my audience members asked for the name of the product I used, even though it was visible in the video. I made sure to respond to their comments and even posted a separate video showing the product, where they could buy it, and how much it costs. This is a way for me to communicate with my audience and create a relationship with them, helping to build trust.

This is something I learned from the presenting workshop and is part of how I plan to launch my career as a presenter.

Now I am going to talk about the acting workshop we had. This workshop was so amazing, and I am super excited that I didn’t miss it. It provided details on not just Spotlight and acting jobs, but also on how to get representation as an actor by an agency. I learned how to email acting agencies, what to include in the email, and how important my acting portfolio is. It serves as a mini-introduction to who I am for any acting agent I’m applying to, as well as for any agent, casting director, or producer viewing my profile.

The workshop also helped me in building my showreel, helping me understand that my showreel shouldn’t be less than two minutes and that it is advisable not to be longer than two minutes. I learned that my face should be the opening of my showreel, as I am the one the casting directors want to see, and how important it is to catch their attention right from the start.

It also provided details on the important information I need to include in the email I’m sending to an agency for job representation, such as my name, location, playing age, and other relevant details. I also learned how to find information about agencies, how to know if they are right for me, and clues to watch out for when signing my acting contract. Additionally, it covered how to go about being a freelance actor and websites where I can apply for jobs, such as Spotlight, Mandy, and others.

This workshop has given me so much information and understanding on how to launch my career as an actor and how to sustain it. In this workshop, I also learned the reality of life as an actor — that many actors are out of work compared to those who are working. However, putting in effort and being consistent will help me become one of the actors who will be employed.

Tucker and Ozanne (2005, p. 12) stated, “The actor thrives on the audience’s response, whether it is visible, audible, or spellbindingly silent.” This means that as an actor, I must keep doing what it takes to be a good actor in order to engage my audience, as we actors thrive on our audience.

To finalize my essay, I will discuss my film production workshop. This workshop explained in detail how to secure funding as an emerging film producer, what to consider before and during the planning of a film production, and how to apply for jobs in production companies. It also provided a list of production companies in the North West, which saved me time researching production companies. Additionally, the workshop covered examples of showreels for filmmakers, the importance of networking, and how it can help establish connections with actors and other filmmakers, enabling us to collaborate on producing our own films. It also provided valuable information on how to pitch my stories and film ideas to organizations that assist filmmakers in obtaining funding for their projects.

One key takeaway from the workshop was learning how to create a crowdfunding campaign for a film. It provided details about crowdfunding sites, such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo, where filmmakers can raise money for their projects. The workshop also covered important information to include in a crowdfunding campaign, such as creating an engaging story, offering enticing rewards for donors, and ensuring the presentation is professional and appealing. These strategies will help attract an audience to donate toward the film, which will be essential for me moving forward as an independent filmmaker. Understanding how to leverage crowdfunding will be invaluable for securing the funding I need to make my films.

This workshop gave me the courage I needed as a filmmaker, helping me understand that although the journey may be difficult, it doesn't mean I can’t succeed. What I need is hard work and consistency.

Overall, this workshop has provided me with the confidence I needed as someone unsure of what the future holds. It has also given me a clear path forward in pursuing my career as an aspiring presenter, actor, and filmmaker. Bassot (2023, p.16) states, “Do not let things interfere with your plans and see the time you have blocked out as precious time for your personal and professional development.” This statement reminds me to do my best to protect the plans I have set for my career, so I can work toward achieving my goals. It is something I will carry forward into my future as an actor who not only wants to be employed but also wants to be recognized as a talented actor by my audience.

Bibliography

Bassot, B.

Long-Term Goal:
My long-term career goal is to establish myself as a versatile actor, presenter, and model, securing consistent work in all these fields. I aim to continuously improve my craft, becoming an inspiring actor known for my dedication and range. I aspire to land a permanent role as a TV presenter, specifically with a brand like QVC or a similar platform. Alongside this, I will focus on expanding my YouTube channel, growing my audience, and hosting more vodcast events. My goal is to create meaningful content while inviting guests who can contribute to the discussions, and eventually host live events. Networking with influencers and other actors will also be essential to my long-term success.

Short-Term Goal:
In the short term, I’m focused on taking practical steps that will help me build a strong foundation for my career. Securing representation from an acting agency is a top priority, as well as applying for a master’s program to deepen my knowledge of film production. I aim to be strategic in how I approach my goals, ensuring that each step is aligned with my overall career aspirations. Building my skills, gaining experience, and networking with industry professionals will be key in the coming months.

Next One Month:
In the next month, I will take concrete actions to move forward with my career. I will book a professional photoshoot for my headshots and modelling portfolio to ensure my representation in both fields is up-to-date and appealing to agencies. I will also begin the process of applying for acting and modelling representation, which is crucial to open up job opportunities. Additionally, I’ll update my actor’s CV and ensure that my portfolio reflects my latest work and achievements. Another key project in the coming month is to start the script for my own film series, Behind the Chapel, which I aim to produce in 2026. This project will be a long-term commitment, but laying the groundwork now will ensure I’m prepared when the time comes to bring it to life.

Next Three Months:
Over the next three months, I will focus on further building my professional network and securing representation. I have already signed with Models Direct Agency, and now my priority is to find an acting agency that aligns with my goals. I will also work on preparing my actor’s showreel, a vital tool in securing acting roles. In parallel, I’ll attend an open day at Salford University to explore a master’s program in Film Production, which I believe will provide valuable insights and skills for my career. Although I initially considered a career change to real estate, a conversation with my academic tutor helped me realize that my true passion lies in acting, presenting, and film production. I am now committed to pursuing a master’s in film production, which will allow me to create my own projects and fully invest in my creative vision.

Additionally, I will host a birthday event for a family friend to practice my presenting and hosting skills in a real-world setting, expanding my network and gaining experience in event hosting. I’ll also aim to complete at least five episodes of my film series and begin preparing for a crowdfunding campaign to finance the project. This includes creating promotional artwork, developing a budget plan, and drafting a production schedule. During this time, I’ll reach out to Mr. Kennedy, a film director I’ve met during a production workshop, to explore the possibility of collaborating on this project. I will also act in my own film to both challenge myself and put my name out there in the acting world.

Next Six Months:
In the following six months, I will focus on expanding my professional opportunities. Rather than waiting for my agency to provide job offers, I will actively seek out opportunities in short films and student projects. Networking events will become a central part of my strategy, as they provide invaluable opportunities to meet industry professionals and learn about new projects. I’ll also continue to build my YouTube channel by producing more engaging content and expanding my social media presence, which will help me gain more exposure and potentially increase my income through TikTok affiliate marketing.

If I haven’t yet secured a permanent presenting role, I will continue applying for relevant opportunities. I will also begin preparing for my film’s production, including scouting locations, assembling a cast and crew, and sorting out the logistics of filming. My goal is to ensure the film is ready for production by the end of the year, with the possibility of working with Mr. Kennedy as the director.

Next One Year:
By the end of the year, I expect to have made significant progress in all areas of my career. I will continue to develop myself as an actor and presenter, whether represented by an agency or working as a freelancer. I will attend more networking events and pursue further training in acting and presenting to keep my skills sharp. Hopefully, my film will be in the final stages of production, and I’ll be preparing for its release. By this time, I will have completed my master’s in Film Production and transitioned to a full-time career as an actor, presenter, and film producer, achieving the goals I’ve set for myself.
