However, the skyline and secondary image are also used to grab readers at the top of the magazine so the proclamation of Tennant answering "your" questions can be easily seen by a reader.

Kylie in front of Dalek to suggest dominance, laying herself over it to assert power. Kylie's overbearing nature on this cover is also emphasised by her image covering parts of the masthead, including almost all of the word "magazine" beneath. This increases the reader's acknowledgement of her power in this shot. However, sexually-suggestive position and costume uses Male Gaze to hook in heterosexual men who might find Kylie seductive.

Explain two ways that design principles have been used in the image to create meaning for the audience.

One design principle used on the magazine cover is that of the alignment of the text, in particular, the puff (is this a puff??) headline "KYLIE!" and accompanying anchorage beneath and above. The text is aligned diagonally, which suggest the dynamism of the casting choice and reflecting Minogue's nature and branding, whilst also standing out to potential buyers. This causes the audience to be able to identify with the magazine's representation of Minogue, creating conceit that persuades the audience to purchase. The idea of dynamism is also reflected in the alignment and performance of Minogue herself as she drapes herself diagonally across the Dalek, further emphasising that idea to the audience whilst also connoting a sense of power and dominance being in front/control of a metal space Nazi. However, Minogue's alignment and positioning could be seen as an example of male gaze theory, with Minogue's dominating position in conjunction with her seductive gaze and plenty of skin on show being attractive to the heterosexual male, thus persuading a heterosexual male to buy the magazine for the sake of sexual gratification.

Great analysis, Ben. Well done :) A suggestion would be to refer to the target audience in more detail, which should help to anchor your points more throughout.

Furthermore, cohesion between the typography through its colour intends to persuade the audience to purchase the magazine. The typography is almost exclusively golden or white, both colours which have connotations of luxury and purity respectively. Therefore, using only these two colours in the puff, anchorage, skyline, and coverline suggest a sense of professionalism and high-standard, which in turn conveys the idea that buying the magazine is a symbol of status and class. Gold is also repeated over the rest of the page to further stress this concept - the background of the skyline; the colour of the Dalek, and Minogue's dress. Consequently, the magazine appeals to people who like the idea of buying and owning things that suggest high status, such as the middle to upper class. The repetition of the two colours across the page, in particular contrast with the black background to ensure that they stand out, as a result reinforces the visual argument to purchase.
