Explain the effects of extreme temperature on a body in the desert?

The desert can vary in temperatures depending on the time of day. According to page 125 temperatures reached up to 115 F during the day, and down to 40 F during the night which can play a darastic role on the human body. The effects it plays on the human body during the day is called a cooling process. During the cooling process your body sweats to try to keep you at homeostasis. In the desert you roughly sweat out 5 liters of water easily. The affect of you losing this much water is your blood goes towards your lungs, heart, and brain. It stays away from the digestive system in order to preserve the little water you have left. The blood thinkens due to the lack of water in the body. An example of this can be found on page 133 when he collapsed in the sand. The body at night is completely different, as you can see on page 133 that the cool air "brought him back to life". At night you dont sweat out any of your water your body has stored.

The human body cools its self down through preciptation (sweating) to get the body back to homeostasis. Our bodies use our fat to keep us warm, and keep our body temperature up.

Describe the strategies Mauro Prosperi used to survive in the desert. How did he meet his energy needs?

Mauro survived nine long days in the blazing desert. Mauro at firstw aited to be rescued but shortly after took things into his own hands. He found a shelter to stay safe in, and then killed a bat. He drank the bats blood for some more water to be in his blood. His other survival tactic was only travel while the sun was rising so that it was too hot and not too cold. At late night he would dig himself a hole and sleep in it so he could preserve his body heat in the sand.

Explain the role stress and the body's response to stress play in keeping a person alive in an extreme environment. Mention at least two body systems.

The brain will recognize that you are under stress. When the brain actually realizes the body is under stress it can react in several different ways.
Nervous System: It reacts rapidly to situations. Their nervous system keeps them alive by giving them fast reflexes to help keep them alive.
Endocrine System: Adrenaline. It provides the body with adrenaline which helps people survive any extreme situations.

Explain the role Mauro's fitness level played in his survival. How were his body systems "trained" to handle the stress?

Since he is already athletically trained to handle extreme circumstances it contributed to his survival tremendously. His body systems were already trained to deal with unusual circumstances. The digestive system is already used to not eating 3 meals a day. His respiratory system was well maintaned to getting his heart rate back to normal very quickly.

1. Travel when its not as hot; Dusk and Dawn. You wont risk losing any of your water supply if you do not sweat as much when you travel.
2. STAY HYDRATED! You cant do anything without being hydrated, because you cant live without water.
3. Never injest anything that you are unsure of, or dont quite sure it is safe to eat.
4. Find some kind of shelter before it gets dark. You cant see predators or danger very vell during the dark, therefore you want to have somewhere you can stay for the night.
5. Stay safe, and aware of your surroundings. Make sure you do everything you can do to make sure you dont get injured or become ill.
