Identifying a focus, and research questions.

An issue I am wondering about in relation to my teaching: students who regularly and systematically skip lessons (tardy is part of this issue when I teach the first periods, especially in evening school, senior years.
For example, my Monday-Tuesday timetable: some students are absent on Mondays and turn up on Tuesdays. Students who attended Mondays tend to be absent on Tuesdays. Some students miss both lessons. This makes an impact on content and classroom management. And by the end of the terms most students are present because they need to get their passing grades.
So my focus questions are:
why do students regularly and systematically skip lessons?
What strategies should I think of to change this behavior?
