  • Europeans brought back syphilis to the Old World. Syphilis is known to be one of the twelve diseases that changed the world and a very controversial one. Europeans were impacted by the outcome of syphilis by bringing it back to the Old World when they were visiting the New World. It is hypothesized that Christopher Columbus and his crew got syphilis from a Hispaniola native. When they returned back from Spain, the crew joined the military and spread the disease even more by traveling. They exposed syphilis to the prostitutes when they traveled, which spread it out all across Europe and the world (The Columbian Exchange: A History of Disease, Food, and Ideas, 166).
