The 1950’s Beat Movement was also known as the Beat Generation. The original meaning of ‘beat’ was weary, but was later changed in meaning to fit a musical sense. Beatniks separated themselves from the general public by adopting different ways of life. They dressed differently, their manners were different. They had what was considered a hip vocabulary which was derived from jazz musicians. The Beatniks advocated for personal release, purification, as well as illumination through the heightened sensory awareness that could be induced via drugs, jazz, sex, or the disciplines of Zen Buddhism.

Beatniks also enjoyed poetry. Beat poets sought to transform poetry into an expression of genuine lived experience. When performing their work, often they would do it with jazz music in the background. They would be considered ‘chaotic’ because they would have no shame in referencing sex as well as other things that weren’t considered something you could perform in poetry. Allen Ginsber’s Howl became the most representative poetic expression of the beat movement and was publicized in 1957. Many people advocated for this type of poetry because it promoted freedom in one way or another.
