Before taking multicultural education class, I always assumed that multicultural is strictly a study of different cultures from around the world. Being able to have the ability to study and take classes of not only your culture, but many cultures around the world to breakdown walls and help understand each other more.

I always though multicultural education was learning about the different cultures of people; however, I am learning that it is so much more than that. I realize now it isn't about learning all I can about the culture of another, but learning all about the individuals I am in contact with and the culture that they recognize for themselves.

When I first heard the words 'multicultural education' I remember thinking about the song "We are the World", (aging myself, I know). Now that I've had a few classes, and have taught a few classes I that it is much more in depth. It is more than just being inclusive, it is about being respectful of who you're being inclusive with. Every person has something to bring to the education table, and as teachers we should incorporate that into what and who we are teaching.

My perspective of multicultural education hasn't changed much since this course, I've taken this course before in the past. I've always considered America a big melting pot- with many different races and cultures. You are bound to learn about a different race and perspective, since it's right at your front door. I think it's important to be aware and learn about different cultures because we share our country with other people, not just Americans.

At the beginning of this course, I thought that multicultural education had to be done by incorporating profound lessons into your class about diversity, culture, etc. However, much like our instructors talked about in the podcast for week 2, M.E. is the foundation of what your class should be built off of- being mindful of your classroom procedures, behavior management, even being mindful of the names you are using in word problems to make sure that your students feel included and safe.
Week 2 specifically made the idea of multicultural education seem much more realistic than what I was envisioning before and it made me realize that it is basically necessary if you want to be an effective/successful teacher.

At first I thought Multicultural Education was only learning about all the cultures and races, but it involves more than that. Multicultural Education consist of one implementing that information into our lives, and in our case, in the classroom.

I also was able to acknowledge some bias when it comes to dealing with race, gender, age and religion. Important topics to cover regarding multicultural Education to capture the whole meaning.

Multicultural education is allowing students to be seen. I believe students need to learn about different races, cultures and histories. This will facilitate in teaching students how to have compassion and respect for cultures different than your own.

My perspective on Multicultural Education has changed because it has shown me how little we have incorporated inclusion of all cultures. It has also shown me that sometimes when people address these hard topics we don't do it justice or we do history an injustice with curriculum violence.

I wrote in one of my reading journals that I have been viewing multicultural education from the perspective of older students, since i work with junior high and up. My aha moment came when I shifted that perspective to education being more multicultural for elementary aged children who are still developing their sense of self and their own identities.
