Most of us spent childhood holidays at the beach. Perhaps, our beach moments are one of the surviving memories we have during our childhood. And it is something that we can reminisce every time we go back to the sea.

In spite of the enjoyment brought by the ocean, there are still potential dangers lurking deep in the sea. Beach accidents happen anytime and anywhere and they tend to occur when you least expect it. Accidents such as drowning happen because people do not observe basic safety rules while in the beach. It would be best to have fun while keeping yourself safe in the water.

Lifeguards and surf rescue crews have responsibilities that should not be underestimated as they carry a task to protect and secure the life of every beach goers. Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club (SSLSC) is a group of voluntary beach lifesavers established to provide a safe and healthy community for Southbourne residents and visitors. They facilitate various activities for club members of all ages, inspiring people to get active, have fun, meet new friends and learn important lifesaving skills. Surf Life Saving Group: A Club with a Young Spirit

The old TV image of well-tanned, able-bodied lifesavers running and diving into the surf to rescue drowning beach swimmers has remained in the minds of many people who grew up in the 80’s onward. Romantic as the images and stories might have been, the realities behind them tell of a different though equally passionate pursuit for the pleasures and adventures of the lifesaver’s life. Childhood tales of adventures, as we all know, have a way of remaining with us all throughout our lives.

That much we can probably say for the first few members of the Southbourne Group Surf Life Saving Club which now operates from a beach hut at the bottom of St. Catherine’s path nearby “Bistro On The Beach” from which members conduct daily patrols on foot, by inshore rescue boat as well as rescue board and surf skis. How’s that for having fun while on the job? For sure, if you dreamt as a child of sailing or just riding a motor boat and ended up doing it as a passion while helping to keep people safe, there is no way you can grow old. Or if you can go to the beach almost every day and soak in the scenery while being with close friends in search of people in distress, you will ever be a hero in your own eyes as well as of those who benefit from your work.

Certainly, Southbourne club members do not sit on their laurels or seek to do their volunteer work to gain acclaim. But to do so in order to rekindle the feeling and the fun of youth would not be bad, for that matter. No wonder that the club is continually swamped with applicants who wish to participate in their various activities. And for years, it has provided safety cover for many water-based activities for uniform groups, schools and groups with special needs. Southbourne has likewise engaged in various events, such as marathons, triathlons and air shows. Now, what more does the true child or the child-at-heart want than spending a day or a weekend engaging in or watching such activities with others with the same passion? As the cliché goes: Life is a beach!

Younger members of the club compose the very spirit of Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club as they also form the foundation of Beach Lifeguards of tomorrow. These members begin their training at 7 years of age in the Nipper programmes, offering many opportunities for all young people to learn and to grow to become mature adults. The club also has programmes for young ones aged 12 to16 in a comprehensive Lifesaving and Life Saving Sport awards, as well as for members aged 16 and above in professional Beach Lifeguarding qualifications, leadership development camps, sports coaching and instructor development courses.

It would be hard to imagine any time even in the far future when the spirit of Southbourne Group Surf Life Saving Club will expire or grow old.

Why are we so fascinated with the sea? Everyone knows we are, but no one knows why. Our innate relationship to water may be because every one of us spent nine months of our life immersed in the water as human fetuses and we simply long to feel the comfort of our mother’s watery womb again. And maybe we love to bathe our bodies to the sea considering that our human body has the same density as water and somehow the water in our cell is similar to that found in the sea.

No wonder many people love to live near the ocean as it brings many great and positive effects. Researches prove that aside from being a source of livelihood, the sea also has surprising benefits to the health and well-being of a person. However, despite the nearly endless benefits brought by the ocean to our lives, it doesn’t hide the fact that it also has a downside. There are dangers that lurk deep in the sea and it can be as unpredictable as the weather.

The sea is safe to no one. Thousands of people die in the sea due to unfortunate circumstances and because some of them do not observe safety rules and regulations when at the sea. This is why it is important to have a lifesaver prepared and ready to respond when such incidents happen. The volunteer members of Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club guards and patrols the coastal area to avoid and prevent accidents and save peoples’ lives.

Using motor powered vehicles and advance rescue equipment, the volunteer lifesavers of SSLSC patrols the sea and its neighboring areas during weekends and bank holidays from May to October. Accidents do not just appear where there are a large number of people, any sort of unfortunate events may also happen to people sailing and exploring the wonders of the sea. Tourist mostly, loves to sail and conduct different kinds of activities that may result in dreadful incidents.

The members of Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club are trained with lifesaving skills needed to respond when an unfortunate incident arise in the coastal community. They conduct fun and relevant activities to enhance and develop the skills their member needed to better serve the community of Southbourne.

During summer, a beach becomes our favorite playground. A place where we can swim, surf, relax and hangout with family and friends. But the enjoyment brought by the ocean also carries a risk for anyone. Each year, many people die due to drowning. In this case, it is really essential to have a lifesaver patrolling beaches to prevent and avoid the sudden loss of life.

A lifesaver is an important asset to the community and a symbol of safety when at the beach. At some point, we feel secured in the sea with a lifeguard watching us. This is because we know that they will come to rescue in case something unexpected happens. In lifesaving, gaining the necessary skills in order to change a situation and save a life is extremely a rewarding opportunity. Lifesaving is not an easy job as it requires extensive training to be mentally and physically fit to respond in an emergency situation under distress. Yet, along with the extensive training comes rewarding benefits such as being part of a team and acquiring friends.

Many of us look back with fondness to our childhood memories of visiting the beach, swimming and playing in the water, exploring a new underwater world of sea creatures and imagining mysteries which lay beyond the safety of the beach and down to the deep-green abyss. Through the years, every one of us relives those childhood memories each time we go back to the beach or to the sea to either splash in the shallow waters or do some other serious activities, such as scuba diving or surfing.

Yet, even those childhood vacations gave us a realization of the dangers of the sea to one and all. We have heard of people who, in their excitement on seeing the beach, dive into the surf while under the influence of alcohol and end up being carried by the undertow. Such tragedies occur because people do not observe safety rules or are not aware of the basic rules to follow when they visit the beach or the sea.

The health and safety of a community is one of the responsibilities not a fraud carried by people in authority or those who have volunteered or have been delegated to undertake that responsibility. Lifesaving is, thus, a vital function that should not be taken for granted by all concerned. It is wise to heed the expert advice and warnings of those who have the know-how and experience in lifesaving.

SouthBourne Group Surf Life Saving Club is a voluntary beach lifesavers group formed to provide a safe and wholesome community for SouthBourne residents and visitors. It offers various activities for club members of all ages with various skills, which include the junior Life Savers group called Nippers who train in the application of rescue equipment, as well as dynamic life-saving competitions for elite club members.

As we can see, even the task of learning the skills of lifesaving can be an engaging extension of our childhood wish to spend as much time at the beach – and even making it a meaningful and worthwhile endeavor. Nothing gives us more motivation than the thought of performing noble or heroic deeds which involve saving others from imminent danger or rescuing them from real perils. For the young, that inspiration can be utilized to lead many of them to pursue activities which fulfill a lifetime of involvement in clubs such as Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club.

Southbourne Group Surf Life Saving group does not only allow members to nurture their love for the outdoors but also their admirable desire to help keep the community a safe, avoid being scammed and wholesome haven for tourists and beach visitors.
