Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

In this stage, which lasts from birth to 18 months, infants look to caregivers for a sense of stability. From page 54 in the textbook, "In these early months, babies need to develop a balance between trust, which lets them form intimate relationships, and mistrust, which enables them to protect themselves." With consistent care, infants will gain the feeling of security. Without consistent care, this could lead to anxiety. In my life, my parents fed and bathed me consistently, introduced me to others, and allowed me to build confidence in myself and the world around me.

Between 18 months and 3 years of age, children develop a feeling of power and the consequences that come with it. From page 55 in the textbook, "As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent." I can remember asking my mom repeatedly after pre-school to get to McDonald's or Burger King, and while many times the answer was no, we did go out for food occasionally. This allowed me to understand that there can be real life consequences due to my actions.

From ages 3-5, children begin to develop a sense of what is acceptable in different settings and begin to contribute to group activity. Page 72 in the textbook says, "Children absorb differing cultural styles of self-definition as early as age 3 or 4, and these differences increase with age." I met my friend Carolyn in Kindergarten, and we have been friends ever since. It was because of my abilities to follow classroom rules, and interact confidently and positively while with peers that allowed me to create and maintain my friendship with Carolyn.

This stage is recognized by a child's ability to gain skills, such as reading and writing, and understand the value of those skills. Ages 5-12 are associated with this stage. From page 72 in the text, "Before ages 5-7, young children's self-esteem is not firmly based on reality, and most young children wildly overestimate their abilities." This could be seen in my early life when we took timed arithmetic tests in elementary school. I began to challenge myself academically and compare myself to others.

Identity vs. Role Confusion typically involves children ages 12-18, where children begin to learn of the roles that are occupied by themselves, peers, and adults. From the text on page 109, "Identity forms as young people resolve 3 major issues: the choice of occupation, the adaptation of values to live by, and the development of a satisfying sexual identity." This occurred in my life as I entered high school and switched from playing football to tennis. I gained a new group a friends who then affected the development of my morals and sense of self.

Associated with 18-40 years of age, this stage involves the conflict of finding intimate relationships with others. In the text on page 109, "According to Erikson, a man is not capable of real intimacy until after he has achieved a stable identity, whereas women define themselves through marriage and motherhood." I can see this in my life, as I am still developing a sense of identity, which could have taken the focus off my last relationship and allowed it to fail. I will continue to pursue the career of my choice and find a partner at the appropriate time.

Categorized by ages 40-65, this stage involves defining one's legacy through community contributions. This can be investing in younger people or productivity in the workplace. On page 113 of the text, "Growth and development do not screech to a stop even then." Hopefully by this age, I am able to have a stable career in food science or pharmacy, making meaningful contributions in research or during patient interactions.

From age 65 to beyond, this stage is significant as one reflects on their life and begins to feel acceptance. On page 113 of the textbook, "We each continue to write and experience the story of human development for ourselves and our society for as long as we live." By this age, I hope to have successfully raised children and worked an impactful career, so that I can then retire, reflect on my life and relax.
