Press the pink circle at the bottom to add an entry. Make sure to answer the question fully and post your name and period number. Question: Explain what you learned about Operator switchboards from the last video. Make it obvious that you have watched the video. Include an appositive (must have to get full credit). Also answer this question: Compare this dialing with what we have today. Does this make you appreciate our time over their time? Come back to the Nearpod when you are completed with the exit slip.

i learned that the operators switch board looks difficult to use. due to the different pegs and paperwork that they have to use and while one person is on call the other person takes a new call so they can have multiple calls at once. the dialing they had back then looked difficult because it required a third person (operator) to connect two people if they wanted to talk on the phone now days we have direct connections to the receiver of the call because of the use of satellites.

This makes me appreciate my time over theirs because we do not have to wait for other people to connect the call because now we simply just call someone on a phone and there are no Operators to connect the calls because it is unnecessary.

I learned that Operators mainly work together to complete a call. They also have many different plugs to use. It seems so difficult to me because I wasn't around at this time. Also, they have to write things down and connect people on a call. It wasn't as simple as it is today. Now, we call a friend and are automatically connected. Back then you had to have an operator "plug you in' to the other persons line. It makes me appreciate our time because everything is much easier and faster then back then. They had to take many different steps to complete something as easy as making a simple phone call.

They use their time wisely, if they see another person is not busy, they go for the opportunity to give them a task and they take care of the next person. It does make me appreciate our time over their time because now our technology allows us to call someone with either a few clicks or typing a number in and entering. The operators, who take the calls and transfer them, have to work twice as hard.(A.P).

I learned that Operator switchboards were very hard to use, and needed someone who knew the codes. They also required a lot of teamwork, since they need to switch tickets when someone isn't busy. They could give a call to someone else to operate, if they see that they are not busy with another call. They need to connect different cords and stamp papers to make a phone call. This all started when Alexander Bell, the inventor of the telephone, made the telephone possible. This way was still way easier than writing letters to people oversea. It really makes me appreciate my time over theirs because they had to wait a very long time to make a call, and even when they did, it was very slow and probably costed a lot more because of the extra labor involved.

People needed to know all the codes and how to connect people to a call. The operators, people who connected calls, had to write down all the calls they got. If an operator sees that the one next to them is not busy, they will ask them to complete whatever task they needed done. This really makes me thankful that we have more evolved phones now because it looked like it would have taken a while to get a call and if you took too long on a call, they would charge you.

I learned that operator switch boards, boards with lots of input slots that transmit calls, are very complex and it takes teamwork to make them efficient. If time is not used wisely while using an operator switchboard, the whole system could get backed up with calls. If one operator sees that another is not busy, they ask them to take their next call. The operators also have to constantly keep switching cords from one hole to the next to get a call where it needs to go.
This system seems very complex compared to our own. It makes me realize how slow things were and how much time they really took to complete. Now all calls are instant and do not require the complex operator switchboard system.

I learned that operator boards are very confusing and can take some practice getting used to. They also rely heavily on teamwork such as giving someone else a call or helping someone fill out the charge. The operators, who manage the call, switch the cords and link people to what they want. (Appositive) Dialing today we just dial a number and we go there without being linked. There are still some operators for business to link you to a certain department. I appreciate how far we've come with phone technology and can't wait to see what will come in the future.

If they were having trouble transmitting a call, they would substitute one of their plugs for someone else's to try and make it work. Dialing today is much easier because we only have to dial a number and it will patch through by itself.

It looked hard to see operators have a bunch of customers at the same time with switchboards and to put in codes for connection. The looked pretty busy but calm at the same time. I am kind of happy that I am in this time period instead of this other time period because it is so much easier to get in contact with people. Yes, it makes appreciate this time over the other time because in the past we keep learning and get more knowledge on technology over time to make it easier for people to use technology.

The operators, Kelly, Rita, and Dot, work together to try to get to all of the calls. They pull some cords out and plug others in to connect and disconnect calls. If they worked alone they might not be able to do it all. Today we dial the number ourselves, and we don't have to talk to an operator. We can hang up whenever we want and can almost always talk to the person we want to. This makes me appreciate the way it is today.

I think what makes them so hard is that they have to write things on papers to give to their partner and they have to constantly switch cords around to partners. The women had these little cards with information on them so they could just pass it to someone else and say, here can you take this call. Then they would just unplug one cord and switch it with another. The dialing system they had back then was really different than ours. We just punch in numbers and are done they have to roll the dials around or unplug different cords.

I learned that teamwork of the telephone operators makes for quick service. If one team member needed help, someone would take the call, or use their own plugs in their board. Also, they had little slips of paper. It seemed as if they came out of little holes in the board. If it was a pay-per-call, they would stamp they card, on a stamp on the right had side, and put it in a folder and log it. The dialing back then seemed to be more complicated, like with the whirly phones with the spinner, to what we have today where we could either just type in the number, or touch a phone button on a contact, which will call them. I appreciate our time over their time because it is simpler than older times, and it is more easy.

I learned that the operator switchboards are to complex for someone to do it themselves. Since they are sometimes swamped with calls, while their partners are free, they often ask for assistance in writing down information, connecting calls, and trying to collect payment for their services.
These boards are much less efficient than the communications we have acquired today. Our calls are now automatically transferred without needing to inconvenience another person in the process. We no longer have to right down phone numbers and switch cords to connect calls. We can connect instantaneously to the person we wish to contact and that is the end of it. This truly makes me thankful that we don't have to deal with this any longer and that in our day and age it is more convenient for everyone when a phone call is made.

From this video, I learned that using operator boards need to include teamwork and the people functioning the calls have to work efficiently for everything to run smoothly. There is a lot of time put in to operating the boards and it looks like complex, compared to what we have today. There was a lot of cables and cords, which I would get confused with. The operators, the ladies that had to run the "inside job," had to switch calls and balance their work with one another for this system to be successful. Now that I saw what people had to do to get a phone call across back then, I am very thankful that people have found an easier, quicker, and less complicated way to transmit conversations. I can just dial a number and I would be able to get to whoever I wished to talk to.

Phone operators had to work together to efficiently make sure everyone who was trying to talk on the phone was able to talk to the person they wanted to communicate with. Each telephone operator had a few wires, and had slips of paper they had to use to keep track of the amount of time someone talked on the phone and how much they had to pay for the phone call. Each telephone operator, who had many things to do at once, often had to ask another person for help. This is much more complicated then the way telephone services work today. Now, we just have to type in a phone number, and the call goes directly to that person; people do not need to operate phone calls now. I am glad that is how our phone service is now, because it's much faster.

The operator had to focus on the length of the call and how much to charge for it. The operators had a bunch of wires that would go into different slits to connect calls. Once they connected the call if it was a pay p er call then they would take a card and stamp it and charge the user for the call. Today it is so much easier because all we have to do is type in a number and it directly sends it to the receiver. Before people had all these wires and complications which is confusing. Then they had to stamp cards and connect calls and there are a bunch of plugs and stuff which I have no idea how they don't mess up when connecting calls.

In the video I learned that being an operator can be very confusing and stressful and needs a lot of teamwork to get the job done. If the operators did not use teamwork to complete their jobs calling someone may take forever. The operators had to log the amount of money a long distance call would take and charge them. This was a lot different from what we do today because today we have call phones without operators. We also don't have to pay for long distance calls in the U.S. Another thing that is different is that all we have to do is press a couple buttons to call someone but back then it was a long process because you had to dial the person that you wanted to call then you would be sent to an operator and then you would finally be able to talk to the person you wanted to talk to. Calling people today is a lot easier than it was a long time ago.

The Operators use cords that transfer the calls to them by switching them out. When one operator has her call cord in the machine and asks for the other operator to handle a call for them, they switch cords. It must be very overwhelming to connect so many calls and have to worry about make sure they stay connected and what to do when they get disconnected. The operators, who must be very busy , have to deal with all those things. The dialing they have is a little different. They have little round buttons on their dashboard that they push to dial the call. We have a screen that we push to dial. Some house phones do have buttons that stick out, but most cellphones just have a screen that you touch. It does make me appreciate our time over theirs. Ours is much easier. Less stressful.

What they would do is if they were getting a call when they were already talking to someone and the person next to them is not on the phone with anyone is they would switch cords and the person not doing anything would now be talking to the person on the phone. It is alot of stress on the operators to transfer and make all these calls
It makes me appreciate how much times have changed because now it is very easy to transfer calls through a click of a button on your device and we can easily communicate with people with our phones instead of going through the long process

I have learned that people used to connect other people’s calls in order for communication to start. Once the caller connects to the ‘dialer’ (Just came up with that), they have to connect that one person with the person/people that they wish to speak to. There are lots of difficulties, and time wasted, that’s makes it take a few minutes to accomplish one connection. The time that these people use up for others is crazy: probably several hours a day! I don’t think that people appreciated the fact that’s these people spent thir time doing something so difficult just so they can talk to other people.

It is a lot better because an operator might make a mistake.

A partner can help take care of a message if the operator is busy with another problem. The partner can plug the message from the operator's circuit board into hers and take care of the problem. This makes me appreciate our phone calling technology because there are few delays because machines send the wireless communications.

I learned that phones are very different from what we have today, and much more complex. Back when this was filmed, phones required you to connect to an operator, who would then use physical wires and a switchboard to connect callers to one another. This is very different from my phone; I just open my contacts and press call. This definitely makes me appreciate our technological advances! It would take twice as long, easily, to call your grandma.

I learned that the phones has changed over time since they have been made. Operator switchboards are used by outlets and cords. Also if people are on a call and they can get another call what they can do is send the call to another person. But to do that they need to work together so it can happen. What was really different was the dials to call. they use to have a little circle and have to spin it now we click them. An appositive is that the people can work quicker and more efficient by using the operators. The operating system we have now is way easier then the other one. That way because I feel like you have to do so much work for the operators, but instead we can use the phones we have today. I rather have the phones we use today in my life.

1. In the video I learned how operators transmit, collect over time, advance, and complete calls using switch boards. They do this through a system of wires, and through using teamwork. For example one of the operators, Mrs. Kelly, is waiting for a call party when she notices it is time to make a subsequent attempt with another. She gives a call to a team mate, and the call is advanced. However the team mate cannot reach a notable appearance on the switching trunk, so she lets go of the first chord and puts in her own. This is how some calls are advanced.
2. Compared to now, phone calls were complicated and time consuming. Now, people can make phone calls though a press of on button, or even by speaking to there phone and telling the phone who to call. Calls only take about thirty seconds to get going, but back in the day it probably toke up to thirty minutes. This makes me appreciate our time over their time, because back than the life was generally hard and time consuming on simple things that we can do now in a matter of seconds.
