Summary of Smart Contact Lenses

"The smart contact lens (SCL) is a wearable ophthalmic device that can provide additional functions beyond vision correction by the integration of devices with the already popularized platform for the eye. The integration of electronic components, such as sensors, microprocessors, and components of wireless communication, can be embedded inside SCLs. These electronic components allow SCLs to perform the function of measuring various biometric data, such as the glucose in tears, IOP, and other biomarkers for various diseases. Also, the SCLs can treat eye diseases through the delivery of drugs, heat, light, and electrical stimulation." (Seo, H. et al 2023)

Pros and Cons of Smart Lenses

Pros: "SCLs could be programmed to provide alerts when glucose levels reach certain thresholds. This would enable wearers to take immediate action, such as adjusting their insulin dosage or consuming carbohydrates, to manage their glucose levels effectively. There are drug-dispensing SCLs that significantly enhance drug effectiveness compared to traditional eye drops. By enabling real-time monitoring of personal health data, SCLs eliminate the need for frequent hospital visits or reliance on bulky medical equipment." (Kazanskiy, N. L. et al 2023).

Cons: "These lenses tend to be notably pricier than traditional lenses, encompassing not only the lenses themselves but also associated devices and maintenance. SCLs are more intricate compared to standard ones, making them potentially more challenging to use and maintain. Users may need to acquire knowledge on how to operate them, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure they remain clean and charged." (Kazanskiy, N. L. et. al, 2023).

In my opinion, the use of smart lenses is innovative in the future of healthcare for eye health and other disease processes by providing health monitoring and transmitting real time data to health care providers to enhance quality of care. Rationale: SCL are engineered for monitoring health conditions (vision changes, glucose), prevention (fluctuations in eye pressure--good for people with glaucoma), delivery (ability to deliver eye medications).
